Description Sapaka GADEW 2006-12-01 10:04:19 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.5.5)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages
OS: Linux

Hello everybody,

When I open Digikam, I would like to see ALL my pictures (actually all the thumbnails) in the main board instead of juste a blank giant field with nothing visible.

In other words, when NO tag is selected, I would really appreciate to have all my pictures Digikam actually manages (ranked in chronological order or the contrary).

I don't know if that's what is meant here and I hope my wish is compatible with this one.

For now, I'm obliged to give ALL my pictures a tag called "be there if no tag is selected" and always have this tag activated when I want to navigate in all my pictures.

I let Photoshop Album when I switched to Linux and I think the ability to navigate ALL your pictures, no matter wich album or wich tag is selected is really necessary and great.

To my point of view, a solution :
Choose in Parameters if :
* You want to see nothing when nothing is selected or
* You want to see all your pictures when nothing is selected.
*Of course, in both situation, when you select an album or a tag, Digikam will do the same as it does now.

I hope that I'm clear enough and that my english is quite understandable.
If you want more precision or explanation, I'm your man.

Thanks a lot

I would like to suggest to show all images when a root-item is selected, such as "my tags" or "my albums".

add on:
 - allow multiple selections (more than one album/tag/date)
 - add "without tags" in the tag view

in combination with Bug 116606 this would be the perfect solution for me ;-)

Christian,

Root item is now used to display a welcome page like kmail or konqueror (available with future digiKam 0.9.1). We need to find an other solution...

Gilles,

is something like this possible:

- allow multiple selections
- allow deselect of selected item, by pressing a second time

then I would like to suggest to show the welcome page at the begining or when ever no item is selected, not even root. The user can allways come back to the welcome page by deselecting all items.

IMHO hiding this feature in a menu is not as intuitive as selecting the root item in a tree view.
Adding an item "all" only because root is occupied by the welcome page, hmmm, I don't know. I read these pages only once after the upgrade, then never again.

The suggested solution would allow both.

I guess showing the welcome page in digikam does not make much sense, unless it provides useful actions for the user.

Even the konqueror about page would not be useful if it didn't provide quick access to some pre-defined places (like the home folder, media devices, etc).

My suggestion is to show the albums including a preview photo for each one (either being the photo set as key or a random image). This way we will be providing the user quick access to the information we manage in digikam: photos and albums.

iPhoto album view in action

Just as an example, this is the album view present in iPhoto.

Another interesting feature it has is the possibility of viewing other photos
from the album by moving the mouse over the album item.

Warning ! this is supposed to be patented by Apple.

Well, presumably it is nowadays impossible to write any software
which does not touch patents in one or the other country.
(I have a strong opinion about software patents, but that is irrelevant here;-).
So from my point of view the best is not to bother (and know) at all
about investigating them, as it is just a waste of time.

Getting inspiration and suggestions from users having experience
with other workflows is definitively welcome, and usually the
actual approach/implementation will be done in the digiKam way, i.e.
differently ;-).

Definitively not the way to go in the future. We have re-implemented Welcome
Page view to promote new features (as previous version) + a background photo
from end user.
