Description Tanja Schulte 2006-11-10 17:12:48 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.5.5)
Installed from: Debian testing/unstable Packages

In KDE before 3.5.5 the description of a program entry was shown in brackets which made the kmenu very good readable. Since KDE 3.5.5 the description is added without brackets so that the whole entries look very unclear and confusing. The not so nice alternative and a lot of work is that the user has to edit all(!) kemnu entries and add brackets to the descriptions manually.

It was commented in bug #135465, but it was marked as "WORKS FOR ME". In my opinion, that should not be left that way. In some languages, removing the parentheses makes it very confusing. A good option could be creating a new option which would be "Name Description", but continue allowing to choose "Name (Description". "Name Description" should not be the default option for languages like Spanish, French, Catalan, etc..., since it makes it confusing in those languages.

So as Bug 135465 has been reopened this one should be marked as duplicate.

If this is intentional like mentioned in Bug 135465 - we don't need a distinction between program name and description anymore, one field would be sufficient because it's put together anyway... I would prefer to get back the brackets (as an option for all other languages than english if the english speaking people prefer "tapeworm" descriptions which I don't believe) because it is easier to instantly get the meaning of an entry at first sight.

I agree it is very hard to understand some of the entries in kmenu now and it looks weird to have entries like e.g. "Keyview for Lotus Lotus Dokumente anzeigen" instead of "Keyview for Lotus (Lotus Dokumente anzeigen)". In English this wouldn't be such a problem because the order of the words is different (but still doesn't look convenient without the brackets).

The bug is in /kicker/kicker/ui/service_mnu.cpp. A fix can be obtained at http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-commit/2006-11/msg00492.html ("restore parens for NameAndDescription format in Kicker (#213450)").

I consider this as being fixed because a separator "-" was added and for my needs that's sufficient. But I mark this as duplicate of Bug 135465 because that bug is still open.
