Description Stephan Sokolow 2006-08-14 13:16:06 UTC
Version: 0.11.1 (using KDE 3.5.2, Gentoo)
Compiler: gcc version 3.4.5 (Gentoo 3.4.5-r1, ssp-3.4.5-1.0, pie-8.7.9)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.16-gentoo-r9-20060701

I have friends who use Gaim with either the gaim-encryption plugin or the gaim-otr plugin.

It would be very nice if Kopete could establish encrypted connections to users who have either of these plugins.

Hello,
I would like to switch to kopete and this is a must for me.
I made switch a lot of friends from MSN to gaim on windows expressely for the encryption plugin.
But now I'm stuck with gaim under linux, and I would like to use kopete because it's developing faster, and best integrated with the desktop.
PLEASE consider developing the interoperability with gaim-encryption!

I would embrace it if there was an import / export feature for both the private and the public keys (the upgrade from gaim to pidgin broke my private keys...).

That could (probably) easily be combined with gpg-Integration: You sign your OTR key with your (better known) GPG key after generation and can send the signed key file by a special kopete function (not within the OTR protocol, of course; simply offer to send the file before contacting someone on the OTR layer for the first time). If the other one uses kopete, too, and trusts your GPG key then the OTR key is imported as trustworthy without any confirmation.

I think a Kopete-to-Kopete-only solution for signing the fingerprint through GPG is not a good idea... It would not work in most cases and only people with encryption knowledge would know what they're doing.
Comment 6 Hauke Laging 2007-11-01 18:08:25 UTC
Which share is "most cases"? We are talking about OTR users only. That is those using GAIM/Adium and - in this scenario - those using kopete. Thus the question is: Which share of the OTR users is going to use kopete then?

The next point is: How many people use GPG and OTR without a useful amount of cryptography knowledge?

The last point: If this feature turns out to be useful (which I assume is rather simple to realize), it would be adopted soon by the GAIM/OTR guys.

Hi, an OTR plug-in for Kopete does exist for those who are looking for that encryption type:

http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php/Kopete+OTR+Plugin?content=55002

Kubuntu users can get it for KDE 3.x and KDE 4 via the repositories

sudo apt-get install kopete-otr

or for KDE 4:

sudo apt-get install kopete-plugin-otr-kde4

I have been using the plug-in on Kubuntu with KDE 3.x for many months now and it's excellent.

add this plugin to the default plugins
Comment 9 Dennis Jansen 2008-08-14 18:04:35 UTC
It is included in the current kopete-kde4 package versio 4:4.1.0-0ubuntu1~hardy1~ppa2. Please close this request.
Comment 10 Stephan Sokolow 2008-08-14 18:09:48 UTC
Can anyone comfirm that it's not an Ubuntu-specific packaging decision?
Comment 11 Matt Rogers 2008-08-14 21:13:24 UTC
Thanks for the information. Closing this report now.

Can't confirm anything about Ubuntu. It's best to ask them.
Comment 12 Stephan Sokolow 2008-08-14 22:07:07 UTC
My point is that it may not be time to close this yet. For all we know, vanilla Kopete 4.1.0 might not include it and it might just be an Ubuntu-specific bundling.
