Description Mats Ahlgren 2006-07-24 00:34:26 UTC
Version: 0.8.2-rc1 (using KDE 3.5.2, Kubuntu Package 4:3.5.2-0ubuntu18 dapper)
Compiler: Target: i486-linux-gnu
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.15-25-686

1) Thumbnails aren't saved/cached. After I generate thumbnails for 1000 photos, and quit digiKam, when I reopen digiKam, then all the 1000 thumbnails are lost and must be regenerated.

2) There is no special button to auto-generate thumbnails. To make matters worse, thumbnails are only generated when needed. Thus for example, to generate thumbnails for my album of 1000 photos, I have to spend 15 minutes of my times waiting for a page of thumbnails to generate, then scroll down, then wait for that page to generate, then scroll down, then wait... This is ridiculous. It's also ridiculous that this feature was supposedly 'fixed' in bug 91840 in 2004 (but in reality was not it seems, nor is there an option in digiKam Settings to allow background generation of thumbnails).

These two problems currently make digiKam unusable for me; I don't want to be showing photos to people and saying "Please wait 15 minutes while I juggle with page-up/down because I have no thumbnails and can't navigate my album without them."

This is completly wrong. digiKAm cache the thumbnails in your ~./thumbnails dir following the freedesktop.org rules :

http://jens.triq.net/thumbnail-spec/index.html

In others words, there is a problem in your system : right access, disk space, etc... Please check your system !

Oh hmm, that's very odd. Thanks for the debugging clues Gilles.
These are my sleuthing results:

1) Thumbnails are indeed saved immediately. I did "ls | wc -l" on the ~/.thumbnails/normal directory. I also discovered why I thought that digiKam doesn't save thumbnails: thumbnails are lost when you move pictures into new albums (unsolved wishlist bug 94562).

Result: OK

2) By doing "ls | wc -l", I discovered that thumbnails were only created when digiKam tried to display them. I still need to scroll down through my album to generate thumbnails, and have searched and searched for a "genete all thumbnails for album" button or contextual menu entry, but cannot find one.

Result: Bug (it seems)

About point 2, there is already a file in B.K.O about. i have planed to add a new menu option to force thumbnails re-generation with 0.9.0 release.
