Description MaxiPunkt 2006-06-22 14:36:01 UTC
Version: 0.44 (using KDE KDE 3.4.2)
Installed from:    Mandriva RPMs

Scanned Images are misplaced on printout AND are in wrong size, although exact scan-resolution is set.

To test this, I created a PNG-File with "The Gimp" with well-defined pixel-sizes.
I added black border lines to be able to check the printout-size with a simple ruler.

Simulated Scan-Resolution: 300dpi
Width: 2.244 Pixel => 19,0cm ( 7,48")
Lenth: 3.189 Pixel => 27,0cm (10,63")

It should be possible to printout this picture on a paper-size of DINA4 (The Gimp can do this, output-size is correct here!).

The file was copied it in the following folder to be able to handle it with "kooka":
/home/<Username>/.kde/share/apps/ScanImages

Kooka cannot printout the picture - it is misplaced to the left and bottom, therefore the right and bottom border is cut-off.
There is no chance to correct the printout position via the printer-settings (borders already set to "0").

=> Using Kooka as a photocopier is impossible!

I have a similar problem. I just installed Xandros 4.1 which apparently has Kooka 0.44 bundled. Using HP ScanJet C5110A final scan thumbnail image looks OK (grayscale, jpeg) but when printed, here or attached to e-mail, the printed image requires 6 pages show it! Can't control the scaling.

Forget about kooka:

1. It doesn't store resolution in saved image-file:
http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=119110

2. It doesn't print an image acc. to the resolution inside the file
(Problem description in this bug-report)

3. It will be dropped for KDE4
http://kooka.kde.org/

4. There is no substitution for kooka, yet
http://dot.kde.org/1182124674/1182125431/

=> There will be no scanning-app at all in KDE4 - isn't this great?
Comment 5 Klaas Freitag 2008-03-16 21:02:12 UTC
MaxiPunkt, you need to doublecheck: First, there is a very active Kooka branch under http://websvn.kde.org/branches/work/kooka-kde3/kooka/, driven by Jonathan Marten. You might want to contact him to help him to fix all the bugs you lined up obove, he is working a lot on Kooka. Maybe he (and you?) will finally be able to port it to KDE4?

Until that happens, you can scan with all graphic applications in KDE4 that make use of libkscan - which always was and is still part of KDE4. AFAIK there also a kipi plugin using libkscan, which also scans.

Thanks Klaas,

I also subscribed to a KDE-Linux mailing list & found that the default Kooka scanner resolution too high &, also, there is a setting to make the printer image fit on one page that I wasn't aware of so this crisis is resolved.

A good suggestion for future Kooka versions would be to make it possible to save resolution & gamma (brightness & contrast) settings permanently, the same way that the image type (bitmap, EG & JPEG) is. Anyway, thanks again for your assistance.
