Description Chris 2006-05-22 19:16:50 UTC
Version: 1.4 (using KDE KDE 3.5.2)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages
OS: Linux

when I try to add .m4b files to the amarok playlist it won't let me. says: These media could not be loaded into the playlist:
When I rename these files .m4a (they are aac files but with the m4b extension to tell my ipod they are audiobooks) they play fine. Please fix amarok so it recognizes .m4b files.

Thanks,

Chris

Is m4b a universal extension?
Comment 2 Ian Monroe 2006-05-22 22:36:18 UTC
You use xine correct?
Comment 3 Chris 2006-05-22 22:56:18 UTC
yes, it's using the xine engine. I believe m4b is a universal extension.. any books you buy through itunes or other ipod related sites will download as .m4b files, even though they are just .m4a files...
Comment 4 Diego Elio Pettenò 2006-05-23 01:16:13 UTC
Okay, so I do have a patch for xine to fix this problem, I added it in portage in 1.1.2_pre20060328-r7 for testing.

I also submitted it upstream, and I'm discussing with Mike Melanson how to handle this. If protected audiobooks bought via iTunes are using m4p extension, then we're fine. If they are using m4b, it might be difficult for xine to get a softfail when trying to play protected files.
Comment 5 Martin Aumueller 2006-10-21 16:03:46 UTC
This is something which has to be fixed in the engine, i.e. xine.

However, to my knowledge, itms sells encrypted audiobooks with the m4b extension, thus xine should be able to deal with protected content.

Actually, this is fixed already in xine-lib CVS HEAD (will be 1.1.3).
