Description Benjamin Creekmore 2006-04-30 22:04:46 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.5.2)
Installed from: Debian stable Packages
OS: Linux

numlock light is on.... pressing numbers shows no keyboard entries on screen... until pressing numlock key twice to turn the numblock light off, and once to turn it on again.. then the numbers work. Numlock setting in kde control panel is also set to "leave unchanged"
Comment 1 Thiago Macieira 2006-05-03 19:28:06 UTC
When does this happen? How can we reproduce it?
Comment 2 Benjamin Creekmore 2006-05-04 09:47:22 UTC
This happens after rebooting

Does that happen at the login prompt as well? Or only after KDE starts? Does it happen in other environments as well?
Comment 4 Benjamin Creekmore 2006-05-06 05:46:18 UTC
***when option is set to "leave undchanged"
*reboot: numlock light is on.... pressing numbers shows no keyboard entries on screen... until pressing numlock key twice to turn the numblock light off, and once to turn it on again.. then the numbers work.
*logout: turns off numlock light and function completely
***turn on-
*logout: leaves numlock on and turns numlock on if it was off.
*reboot: leaves numlock on and turns numlock on if it was off.
***turn off-
(when numlock is on or off) *logout: turns and leaves numlock light and functionality off
(when numlock is off or on) *rebooting: numlock light is on.... pressing numbers shows no keyboard entries on screen... until pressing numlock key twice to turn the numblock light off, and once to turn it on again.. then the numbers work.
Comment 5 Thiago Macieira 2006-05-06 10:56:34 UTC
So, from what I understand, this happens before KDE starts. The numlock light is on, but the functionality is off. And the software thinks it's off, so pressing the NumLock key actually turns it off.

Is that an accurate description?
Comment 6 Benjamin Creekmore 2006-05-06 18:28:17 UTC
it's wierd, becuase I have to press the numlock key twice to turn off the
light... then once to turn it on. Not sure what is going on there.

Comment 7 Lubos Lunak 2006-06-22 17:01:54 UTC
The numlock is handled by the kernel and by X server, not by KDE. Please report your problem to X.
Comment 8 Martin Fitzpatrick 2008-04-05 01:50:44 UTC
Lubos Lunak: Apologies for dropping a note on a Resolved/Invalid bug, but if the Numlock status is handled by X/kernel what effect does the option in "System Settings/Keyboard & Mouse >> Numlock on KDE Startup" have?

I have this option set to "Turn On" yet this does not happen. The light on the keyboard is lit but numlock is not set, as reporter above I have to hit twice: once to switch it off (from off) and second to switch it on.

Comment on Kubuntu forums about similar problem in 3.5.5:
http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=3092588.0;prev_next=prev#new

(KDE 4.0.3/Kubuntu here)

Should I file a new bug? Or reopen this? Thanks.

the original report is a dupe of bug #136851, i think.

re comment #8: yes ... a new bug - against the x server (if none exists yet). i see some weirdness in kdm, too. otoh, played with xkb setting recently, so i cannot be sure ..
