Description Christian Engels 2006-04-11 11:48:32 UTC
Version: 1.4-beta3 (using KDE KDE 3.5.2)
Installed from: Gentoo Packages

I would like to find it handy if you can generate a dynamic playlist which plays your music in the order of the smartplaylist.

Follwing problem: If you hear your music in alkphbetical-artist-order, you have to load the entire collection (or a large smartplaylist). This needs lots of ram and has many disadvantage (like adding a track, needs minutes).
Furthermore it should be possible to do the following thing: listen your normal music, want to hear another track far away from your position in your music, hear your music like nothing has happend.

The second request can already be fulfilled by using the 'queue tracks' feature of amarok.
scroll through your playlist to the track you want to hear, right-click on it, and select "queue track" from the context menu. This will force amarok to play the queued track next, then continue on from the position in the playlist before the queued track was played.

The first idea sounds like a good one - to allow dynamic playlists in the "playlist shuffle" type of dynamic playlist to be played in order. Then you could simply create a custom smart playlist (or use the predefined "Entire Collection" smart playlist), sort it the way you want, then configure your dynamic playlist to play tracks from the list in the order presented instead of shuffling them.

I think this is beyond the scope of Dynamic playlists. it certainly wasn't designed to be play songs in order, and I can't foresee implementing this easily or without destroying the code base.

I'm reopening this because it should be looked at again in light of 2.0. 2.0 is requiring huge changes in the code base anyways, and the proposed new playlist would make this functionality much more important, since long playlists could be difficult to manage.

I can't see the use outside of someone who wants to listen to their music alphabetically. Which I just have to say is simply silly, I would think only a few users would want this at most. I noticed dangle is voting for this bug and she doesn't strike me as the OCD type, I will have to ask her about it. :)

Now having the dyanmic playlist work at the album level rather then the individual track level, while probably being hard to implement, is something I might enjoy myself and I'd imagine others too. I will keep this in mind when refactoring dynamic playlists.

Kk I'm silly. she already did comment. I just had a thought, since you can play dynamic playlists from static playlists, actually playing in order would make sense.

Wrong version. Showed up in searches for Amarok 2 bugs.
Comment 7 Lydia Pintscher 2008-07-12 16:11:36 UTC
Correct version ;-)
See Jeff's comment.

Ah. In that case. Closing as WONTFIX as the Dynamic playlist system is getting completely redone in Amarok 2. ( We now know a lot more about how it is going to look than we did when Jeff made that comment ) And for now, there is no such thing as smart playlists at all. ( there is something much better! )
