Description Victor Arguelles 2006-04-04 01:00:57 UTC
Version:            (using KDE KDE 3.5.2)
Installed from:    Ubuntu Packages
OS:                Linux

In Spanish, some people spell Mexico with a J instead of an X: Méjico. The Real Academia Española considers both spellings (México and Méjico) to be correct, but recommends spelling it with an 'x'. It is a word that comes from Nahuatl, and these words tend to be spelled with an 'x' when the 'j', 's', or 'sh' sound is found.

Also, this is a bit annoying to us Mexicans, as we (and most other Spanish-speaking countries) only use the 'x' spelling, and it should be spelled as Mexicans spell it, at least in Spanish.

It should be spelt the way the locale native speakers expect it to be spelt. If it varies from region to region, we have to split the locales.

That's why we have es_MX, es_ES, es_AR, etc.
Comment 2 Victor Arguelles 2006-04-07 06:38:30 UTC
How do you change that then? In the control center, you can only select spanish, but no mexican spanish or spanish spanish. There is no es_MX i18n package. The output of locale is:

LANG=es_MX@euro
LANGUAGE=en_MX:en_US:en_GB:en
LC_CTYPE=es_MX@euro
LC_NUMERIC="es_MX@euro"
LC_TIME="es_MX@euro"
LC_COLLATE="es_MX@euro"
LC_MONETARY="es_MX@euro"
LC_MESSAGES=es_MX@euro
LC_PAPER="es_MX@euro"
LC_NAME="es_MX@euro"
LC_ADDRESS="es_MX@euro"
LC_TELEPHONE="es_MX@euro"
LC_MEASUREMENT="es_MX@euro"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="es_MX@euro"
LC_ALL=

My point is: if the spelling is controversial and changes from country to country, then we'll need to split the kde-l10n-es package, just as it is done to a few other languages already.

But I am not sure this is the case here. I don't speak Spanish and the decision comes from the translators in the end.
Comment 4 Victor Arguelles 2006-04-08 04:59:36 UTC
I don't think it's a controversial issue. There is no one arguing about keeping the 'j' spelling. The RAE recommends the 'x' spelling, which is also the one that is used by most people. I don't think it necessary to split the spanish translations, but to find the most fitting spelling for a given word depending on the case.

Hola Victor

   I wanted to change Méjico by México but I cannot find it. The locale in KDE is correct:
 http://websvn.kde.org/branches/KDE/3.5/kdebase/l10n/mx/entry.desktop?rev=533225&view=markup

KDE uses México everywhere except in two ocurrences that I will change now. Can you please tell me where have you seen Méjico written so in KDE?

Comment 7 Noel Köthe 2006-05-13 19:15:06 UTC
another info to this bug from http://bugs.debian.org/366861
(kde 3.5.2)

"The name of the city, country and state is "México", not "Méjico". In
many parts of the kde-i18n-es files you can find "Méjico".
...
The Constitution of Mexico, writing in Spanish, always refers to Mexico
as "México". I have checked with Mexican people and they agree to call
their country "México". This also applies to the city, the state
and the country."

I attach the patch to 3.5.2 if you want to check.
