Description Detlef Rahnfeld 2006-03-22 16:10:05 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.5.0)
Installed from: Gentoo Packages
Compiler: gcc version 3.4.5
OS: Linux

Konqueror is configurable to open http-links in new tabs instead of opening new windows.

problem: this logic doesn't apply if one uses multiple virtual desktops.

imagine
kmail is running in desktop 1 and
konqueror (with an tab-browser-profile) runs on desktop 2
(used desktops forced through kcontrol:special window behavior)

a link clicked in kmail opens a new tab in konqueror ONLY IF konqueror runs on the same virtual desktop, but that istn't the standardcase on an multiple-virtual-desktop-environment.
so one ends up with one konqueror instance per clicked link instead of one tab per clicked link.

this problem doesn't exist in opera or firefox for example.

Can the reporter please outline what the correct behaviour would be.
Comment 2 Bram Schoenmakers 2007-07-17 11:08:53 UTC
I think that all opened links are opened on the Konqueror instance on desktop 2, if available.

IN KDE 4.6.4 there is a setting "open tab in existing konqueror when URL is called externally"
However, I did not get that to work when clicking a link in kmail or akregator.

Is this still valid with Konqueror 4.8.4 or 4.9 beta2?
Comment 7 avlas 2017-08-04 15:06:51 UTC
The trick that works for me is to specify "kfmclient newTab" as default browser in systemsettings. This applied to Konqueror in kde 4 as well as it applies to konqueror in kf5

I reopened the bug as I could reproduced the exact behavior described by the original poster. The workaround I mentioned 1+ years ago does not work anymore.

Perhaps this is something about KDE apps in general, as this behavior also happens in Kate and Okular, i.e., they admit tabs but new windows are opened, instead of tabs, if Kate or Okular instances are initiated from a different virtual desktop.
