Description Benjamin Quest 2006-03-17 13:42:22 UTC
Version: 1.4-beta2 (using KDE 3.5.1, Debian Package 4:3.5.1-2dest0 (3.1))
Compiler: gcc version 3.3.5 (Debian 1:3.3.5-13)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.11-ln.std

The description of the Buttons in the collection browser are a little bit too long, namely the "scan collection" button. In the german translation it reads "Änderungen erfassen". Along with with the filter "Guppierung" the column claims a lot of space in a way that on the 15 inch TFT (laptop 1024xresolution) the Playlists buttons drop partly out of view in the dynamic mode.

To make a long story short: The text of all the stuff does not fit into a standard laptop screen. But it is only a tiny little annoyance, wouldn't it be better to have the description for the buttons as mouse-overs or tool-tips (would be also coller, no?)?

Other than that, amaroKs! and behaves already stable in version 1.4beta2 here. Congrats!

BEnjamin

Translations are handled outside of the amaroK project, by the KDE translation team.

Actually i think that this is not a translation bug, but instead a problem with UI desgin. Those buttons should be buttons without a description next to it. I propose to remove the descriptions from the UI and instead put it into a quickhelp popup which appears when the mouse hovers over the button.

This isn't a translation bug, since a) the original text is almost as long as the german translation and b) other languages will have the same problem. So we should fix the problem and not the symptom.

Mark, is there any chance to get this proposal into 1.4?

Bye,
Thomas Reitelbach (german translator of amaroK)

No, Thomas, I don't think that tooltips are an adequate replacement for text-buttons. Important buttons should have text next to them, especially if the function is uncommon or difficult to understand from the icon alone. Text-buttons make the interface a lot more accessible, especially to new users.

Btw, we're not the only one starting to use this kind of button. I keep hearing that new Microsoft applications use them too, since usability studies have proven their benefits.

Well, it was only a proposal. If you want to use this kind of button, then you (developers) must be aware of the upcoming problems with long translations. This is not only an issue with german translations, but with almost every language (even english). So one might consider using less buttons per row in favor of those text-buttons. i guess two text-buttons occupy the same space as 8 icon-buttons :(

I have now changed the translation of this one button to "Aktualisieren", which is shorter than "Änderungen erfassen". But please rediscuss this general problem with the other developers.
