Description James Ots 2006-03-12 13:02:37 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.5.1)
Installed from: SuSE RPMs

To reproduce:
1. Type a single line of text.
2. Insert a table (3x2 - the default)
3. Enter some text in the first cell.
4. Try to select the text just above it.

For me, I can't do step 4, because if I click near the bottom of the text, the table is selected, while if I click near the top of it, the page frame is selected.

By the way, I'm using version 1.5-beta2

I think the real bug is that the cursor is not correct.
See; if you click _above_ the text you get a hand cursor and you can select text with that just fine. Only when you select a frame (which in this version a table still is) then you end up selecting the main frame.

In KWord 1.5 (b2) you can click on the edge of a frame to select text _if_ there already is a cursor in that frame.

I'm not sure about that. On my computer at least, once the caret is inside the table, I'm unable to select text above it.

The text I was using was 9pt Bitstream Vera Sans. If I make the text bigger then I can select it. It looks like there's an areas about 9pt wide around frame borders which, when clicked on, selects the frame. So when there's a bit of text 9pt tall between two frame edges, there isn't any space in between to select the text.

thats because the table is a different frame; like I wrote:
"you can click on the edge of a frame to select text _if_ there already is
a cursor in that frame"
Obviously; if your cursor is in the table you can't select it like that,
you end up selecting the border.

So, move the caret to the main text frame and you can drag select easier.
This is a clear usability problem which unfortunately needs quite some
changes in KWord to be corrected.

That's just the point - I can't move the caret to the main text frame, because when I click _on text_ in the main text frame, it doesn't move the caret into the text in that frame, it selects the frame.

it is necessary to improve the use of the tables (see bug 102011).

Closing all table bugs as 'Later' because the bugs are about code that is to be rewritten.
