Description Ed 2006-02-02 18:04:49 UTC
Version: 3.5.1 (using KDE KDE 3.5.1)
Installed from: Unlisted Binary Package
OS: Linux

In KDE 3.5.1 when you have an image (bluemorning.png is default) set for the background as in View>Configure background>Picture and click on a file in any of the three file list views it will distort the image. This was not the case with 3.5.0. Some additional information that might help is if you make a snapshot of the file manager with a picture background that has lines in it will also show up distorted when viewed with kuickshow.

I would also like to add that the linux distro used is PCLinuxOS .92 and KDE is installed from rpm's.

I can confirm this bug. I have seen it in 3.5, 3.5.1 and 3.5.2. My distribution is Debian unstable, but I noticed the same problem in kubuntu too. Simply put, when you are in a list view and you select any file, the background image is suddenly repeated in each row of the list (instead of covering the whole canvas of the window). If the redraw is forced, for example with the reload button, then the background image is correctly tiled again.

I can confirm this is happening with KDE 3.5.2 in Kubuntu Dapper. It's not really distracting just feels somewhat unpolished.
Comment 8 Peter van der Male 2006-04-18 03:10:35 UTC
Also on 3.5.2 on Gentoo
Comment 9 james ashton 2006-06-07 17:35:35 UTC
The bug is still there with 3.5.3 on Debian unstable

Totally distorted

Confirmed for Konqueror 3.5.2 on Gentoo compiled with -O1.
Often, the background image even disappears completely or gets distorted as in
the attachment. This only happens when there's enough files for the scrollbar
to activate.

Once again, the bug is still there with 3.5.4 on Debian unstable.

Just an idea. If you look at the "after selection" attachment, you'll notice that the dark gray area over the name of the selected file doesn't span the entire column of the list view (there is a strange light gray area in its place). Now, I am pretty sure that previous versions of KDE, up to 3.4.x I believe, didn't have this behaviour, that is the area over the name of the selected file spanned at least the entire column of names. Maybe the bug has been introduced together with this "visual improvement" (?) of a shorter selection area covering only the length of the name of the selected file.
Comment 13 Christoph Wiesen 2006-10-01 15:50:49 UTC
It probably has, but the change you're refering to was more than a "visual" improvement. It changed the way files can be selected. Before clicking on free space right next to the filename could alrady select the file - only because it was below the 'name' column and not below the next column.

Anyway looking at this earlier fix might help in fixing this bug as well.

In reply to #13.

That doesn't seem to be the case for my system (debian unstable kde 3.5.4).
In fact, I can still select the file by clicking on the free space next to the filename.....
Comment 15 Christoph Wiesen 2006-10-05 18:47:48 UTC
Yes, thats true on every system. I put it wrong in #13. Actually it is quite possible to *select* a file by clicking on the space to the right of the file name, no matter if it's within the 'name' column or one of the other columns. It's just that previously it was possible to execute / right-click / move a file just by clicking/double-clicking on the blank space to the right of the file-name, as long as it is within the "name" column.
The selection box actually spread over the whole space of the "name" column at that time. This fix was a visual (only filename is visually selected now) as well as a functional one (only file-name allows execution / movement now, not the blank space).

It's just that when this fix was applied maybe noone thought about the background image, so that it still behaves as if the whole name column was visually selected.

Btw. the whole 'click anywhere on the same line to select a file' idea isn't feeling right imo, but that's yet another topic ;)

Still there on r620k

The bug is still there with 3.5.6 on Debian unstable

The bug also exists when you view a file in embedded viewer by clicking the filename and then go back (Alt-left)
Comment 20 FiNeX 2009-09-08 15:35:19 UTC
This feature has been dropped from KDE 4 and it will not be improved in KDE 3. Actually background on file manager (dolphin) is not intended to be developed.

Thanks.
