Description James Ots 2006-01-16 09:51:53 UTC
Version:            (using KDE KDE 3.5.0)
Installed from:    SuSE RPMs

I'm not sure if this is related to bug 58954 or not, but every so often, when I start kmail (always within kontact, in case that's important) then maybe one or two of my custom icons gets lost. (i.e. they go back to the default icon.) It doesn't happen every day - maybe only once every other week. As far as I can tell it's the only setting I ever lose. It's not always the same folder.
Comment 1 Tristan Miller 2006-02-24 01:19:01 UTC
Is this perhaps the same as Bug 113266?
Comment 2 James Ots 2006-02-24 02:11:30 UTC
This is a different bug. Renaming folders works fine for me. It's just when I start kmail that one or two random folders lose their custom icons. Not whole subtrees of them either. I'm trying to spot a pattern to it, and I'll report more if I can work out any possible patterns.
Comment 3 Rob Parker 2006-04-07 20:54:23 UTC
My folders also lose their custom settings, apparently randomly. This occurs roughly every other day. I also use kmail within kontact.
Comment 4 Allen Winter 2006-04-08 22:30:15 UTC
There was a bug in the KMail with KDE 3.5.0 where folder properties were being lost and/or reset.

I believe that bug was fixed in the KMail with KDE 3.5.1.

What version are you using?
Comment 5 Rob Parker 2006-04-08 22:55:33 UTC
I'm using Kmail 1.9.1, as part of KDE 3.5.2 Level "a"
Comment 6 James Ots 2006-04-09 00:43:41 UTC
I'm also still experiencing this bug in kmail 1.9.1, kde 3.5.2 Level "a".
Comment 7 Allen Winter 2006-04-10 02:04:55 UTC
I am unable to reproduce this. But, I believe you.

Next time it happens, could you look in ~/.kde/share/config/kmailrc
and check, that for the folders in question, you have set

  UseCustomIcons=true
  NormalIconPath=/some/path/to/the/normal/icon
  UnreadIconPath=/some/path/to/the/unread/icon

Or, if you like, you can email me that file so I take a look.

Allen,

Thank you for your quick response. The icons were out again today, but I
fixed them before getting your email. However, I checked the file
~/.kde/share/config/kmailrc and the settings appear to be correct, except
that some folders have settings like this:

UnreadIconPath=folder_yellow_open

which isn't a valid path. Most folders have settings like this:

UnreadIconPath=/opt/kde3/share/icons/crystalsvg/16x16/filesystems/folder_yellow.png

which is a valid path. Would the next step be to manually fix all the
invalid paths?

Yeah, that isn't right. Should give me a big hint as to where the bug is.

Yes. First quit KMail (or Kontact). Then hand-edit the kmailrc file.
Then restart KMail (or Kontact).

Let me know if the custom icons come back. If so, then I should be able to fix the bug.
Else, we need to keep looking.

Allen,

OK, I hand-edited the kmailrc file. There were about a dozen lines that
needed changing. The icons didn't change, of course, because I had already
fixed them after they lost their settings early yesterday. But now I will
wait to see if they hold their settings.

Having 'folder_yellow_open' should be ok for an icon - it just means use the folder_yellow_open icon no matter which icon set you're using, and no matter what format those icons are in. I have some entries that use a full path and some with the short path, and they both show up fine.

I think the settings being lost might be to do with KDE shutdown - I think it might shut down before kontact has finished writing it's settings or something?
Comment 12 Rob Parker 2006-04-11 01:25:04 UTC
Previously, my folders would lose their settings every couple of days. If it happens again, I'll check the kmailrc file and post the results here.

OK, it happened again. I accidentally clicked on either the kmail icon or the kontact icon on my task bar (can't remember which, and can't replicate), while kmail was already running as part of kontact. The program tried to load for a minute or two and then disappeared taking kmail with it. When I restarted kontact, kmail had lost custom settings in three folders. In kmailrc, those folders had no setting ("UnreadIconPath= ").

I've tried repeatedly to make this happen again, but can't. But it has happened before; I just never connected it with the lost icon settings.

Does that help?

I just lost an icon again. I shut down my computer at work, booted it up at home and an icon had gone back to the default again.

My kmailrc starts with "H/=>^A" - that relevant?
Comment 15 Rob Parker 2006-04-13 04:50:33 UTC
I just lost more icons. I clicked on the KDE PIM shortcut, got a message saying that kmail was already running (I don't think so: it had been shut down, and there was no sign of it on the desktop or taskbar), and that loading it twice would risk losing mail. So I clicked exit, and started it again. It loaded without further error messages, but seven icons had lost their settings.

It happened again, and there appears to be a pattern: clicking on the KDE PIM icon when kmail is already running, causes it to crash and lose icon settings.

I'm not sure why I'm not seeing that it's already running; that will take a few more crashes to figure out <g>

The KMail developers just committed a patch that I think will fix this
bug for the KDE 3.5.3 release. Will be testing the patch for the next
couple weeks, but I'm pretty sure they found it this time.

In fact, the patch fixes all bugs that deal with folders settings getting lost. So this is a big fix for the 3.5.3 release.

Not closing this bug until you guys can fully test and verify the fix. Probably after you start using 3.5.3.

That's good news. I just crashed kontact again, by clicking "open in address book" on an email address that wasn't in the address line of an email. Lost 13 icons ;p

I think this bug is *almost* completely fixed. I say "almost" because I just accidentally opened kmail twice, and lost settings on 1 folder. But that's a huge improvememt over 13 that lost their settings the last time. Kmail is a lot more stable, and when it crashes, the results are a lot less serious. To whoever worked on this: thanks, this is a huge improvement.

the loss still happens with SVN from today.
Comment 21 James Ots 2009-01-08 21:44:43 UTC
I haven't experienced this for a long time. I believe it is probably fixed now.
Comment 22 Rob Parker 2009-01-09 06:10:05 UTC
No, I had to re-enter a dozen icons a few months ago. The problem seems to be associated with crashes, and both crashes, and losing icons when a crash happens, are much less common (on my computer). This may be partly because I don't do things which have caused crashes in the past, including 1. searching email content (especially all folders at once), 2. clicking an email address to "open in addressbook" if I'm not sure the address is in addressbook, and 3. accidentally opening a 2nd instance of Kmail. But when it happens, it's pretty annoying to have to stop everything and reenter a dozen icons with their properties. Overall, though, Kmail is still way better than Thunderbird!
