Version: 1.4.2 (using KDE KDE 3.5.0) Installed from: Slackware Packages OS: Linux KWord spell checking doesn't work for my language even most other KDE applications does have working spell checking. For some reason KWord seems to use different settings than with most of the other KDE applications (even KSpread where the spell checking is working) and the spell checking dialog doesn't offer me the dictionary options that are working with other apps. Spell checking settings in KWord: http://www.saunalahti.fi/rikle/kword.png While the language/region code fi_FI is correct this doesn't make the spell checking work. Here's how the spell checking settings are set up in KSpread: http://www.saunalahti.fi/rikle/kspread.png Spell checking does work in KSpread. I wonder if it would be possible to unify the spell checking settings through the koffice and prefer the KSpread style here (that's what's working).
kspread is using the old spellchecking system which had lots of issues (e.g. it was responsible for kword's popupmenu hanging on many systems, etc.) kword and kpresenter use the new spellchecking system, called kspell2 (which uses the ispell/aspell dictionaries directly instead of executing the ispell/aspell programs); but since it's newer, it might have some setup bugs indeed. > and the spell checking dialog doesn't offer me the dictionary options that are working with other apps. That's normal, there's less manual configuration to do. > Spell checking settings in KWord: http://www.saunalahti.fi/rikle/kword.png > While the language/region code fi_FI is correct this doesn't make the spell checking work. Some hints for investigating this issue: * Do you have any debug output from kword when doing a spell-check? * Do you have ispell or aspell or both? * If you launch ispell on the command-line, does it give an error about an invalid hash? (I had this issue here for french, and I solved it by getting rid of ispell-fr and using aspell-fr instead). * If you compiled kdelibs from sources, can you try cd kdelibs/kspell2/tests ; make check and then running the various programs there? > I wonder if it would be possible to unify the spell checking settings through the koffice Yes, that's planned, we'll use kspell2 everywhere in the long run :}
Quote (had no idea how to get the quote somewhat automatically): ------- kword and kpresenter use the new spellchecking system, called kspell2 (which uses the ispell/aspell dictionaries directly instead of executing the ispell/aspell programs); but since it's newer, it might have some setup bugs indeed. ------ This is exactly the issue with my language then. With Finnish language one needs to use a hack that's to install a wrapper for ispell that replaces the correct ispell and directs requests for other languages but finnish to the correct ispell and handles finnish language itself (the thing is called tmispell, and this has something to do with the only proper finnish dictionary been released under some strange format/license/whatever, this one's called soikko).
wrapper for the ispell executable
Ouch. Is there any chance you can find out exactly the difference between tmispell and ispell, so that we (e.g. Zack;) can integrate the support for the finnish dictionaries into kspell2?
tmispell can be downloaded from http://users.tkk.fi/~ptvirtan/programs/tmispell.html.en It has some english documentation (in the sources too).
The main problem is that i/aspell functionality is not enough to represent finnish language in any sane way. Trying to support them is just waste of time, the language is just so different. tmispell ispell wrapper+soikko is currently the only working almost free finnish spellchecker. There are also projects to create completely free spellchecker with hunspell and one project with malaga+wrappers. So currently finnish needs a way where kspell2 would call ispell as kspell used to. The other possibility is that we don't have any spell cheking in finnish. I think this is quite a big disadvantage for kspell2. I hope there is a way to emulate old functionality. Otherwise kspell2 is huge step back for finnish language.
How scalable is the KDE ispell/aspell dictionary reader. It might be possible to do 100-200 million word list that contains most of the Finnish word forms. That list might be created to support vim-proofreader, that also has the limitation that it expects its own format.

SVN commit 1030665 by zander: Fixes app-wide language changes to be honoured by the speller. Remove the koffice-local clone of the config dialog and use the one from kdeui instead. Also listen to the language change and store that in our apps config file and restore that properly on restart.
