Description Robert Knight 2005-11-13 16:33:40 UTC
Version: 1.2 (using KDE 3.5 (RC1), compiled sources)
Compiler: Target: i486-linux-gnu
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.12-9-386

My IMAP account has a large number of folders and items, since as well as email, it also provides remote access to my university filestore (ie. everything in my "home" directory on my university's servers).

When I ran the first check the UI completely froze whilst KMail tried to access every single item in my IMAP account, which runs into thousands.

After some hunting I found the "List only open folders" option - which solved the problem. I think it would be helpful for KMail newbies like myself if this was enabled be default.

Agreed -- this should be on by default. Also, "List only open folders" should probably be "check only open folders" for clarity. (For those just reading this bug and looking for this feature, in Kontact it's located in Settings > Configure Kmail > Accounts Icon > Receiving > Your Mail Account > Modify > List Open Folders.)

It also tends to freeze when it hits large shared (Public) folders. I used to work for a Fortune 500 that had thousands of Exchange folders and it would take twenty minutes to check mail.

Great feature! Turn it on by default. ;-)

Out of curiosity, what does that option actually *do*? I mean, in this context, what's an open folder? Why would I only want to list (or check) them and not the others? I can't find this documented anywhere.

Want to know, too. Where can I find this option? Is it still present in KDE 4.3?
