Description Andrey Borzenkov 2005-11-04 14:53:13 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.4.92)
Installed from: Mandriva RPMs
OS: Linux

Mandriva cooker, 1024x768 resoluion, 9pt default fonts (Tahoma TT font), ru_RU.UTF-8 locale. Kmail settings window is too large. I though this was fixed (at least I do not remember it in 3.4.x) but apparenly it is back again. See attached screenshot.

I wonder why it doesn't fit. Could you take a screenshot of the
"advanced" (sorry don't know russian for that) tab too?

Do you know if this happens when KDE is run using an english locale?
Comment 3 Andrey Borzenkov 2005-11-09 20:01:08 UTC
"Advanced" has the same problem.

If I switch KDE language (NOT locale - it remains the same, just change language in KDE Control Center to English) dialog is displayed properly.

My guess is, Russian in general has longer words than English but dialog was not designed to account for it; it is probably using the same space between components, but components themselves take more space. It should at least check if it fits on the screen and use sliders where appropriate.

Sorry for extremely confusing idea, I am not an expert in graphical design.
Comment 4 Don Sanders 2005-12-29 04:45:00 UTC
Could you please take a screenshot of the 'Advanced' tab (as I
request earlier).

Also what are the longest strings in the comboboxes on the 'General'
tab, that is the drop down menus containing the phrases 'contains'
and 'move into folder'.

(Yes probably someone make a long Russian translation of a particular
phrase, the question is which phrase exactly).

Don.

KMail filter settings advanced

I am sorry, I was sure I have attached it too.

I attach several screenshots with lists visible; it may be Action list that
contains relatively long phrase.

Works for me on 1024x768 . But I don't have a russian font. If you are still experiencing this problem in KDE 4.3, please report back.
Comment 12 Andrey Borzenkov 2009-12-23 11:56:37 UTC
Well, from xwininfo:

  Width: 1209
  Height: 499

so it obviously is larger than 1024.
Comment 13 Björn Ruberg 2009-12-23 19:18:37 UTC
Can you please investigate with a live-CD or something similar? For me the dialogs are perfect by default on several installations. Either you have a bad configuration or the problem is russian specific. In both cases we should find out.
Comment 14 Andrey Borzenkov 2009-12-23 20:55:22 UTC
First let's make sure we are not comparing apples and oranges.

My screen size and resolution is:

  dimensions: 1280x800 pixels (290x181 millimeters)
  resolution: 112x112 dots per inch

KDE is set to use system resolution and 9pt fonts. When I try to measure fonts on screen I get 1/8th of inch which to my best knowledge *is* 9pt. The screenshot I attached and dialogue size I gave above are all using these settings.

I now tested under clean account. It gets by default 9pt fonts as well. But! it also gets resolution override set to 96DPI. Of course, it means, that every font became significantly smaller - measuring font size, I get less than 1/8th of inch for a default konsole 12pt font. Under these conditions default dialogue has 1004 pixel width which barely fits on 1024x768 screen. As soon as I disable resolution override, the same dialogue becomes 1126 pixel wide, which obviously does not fit anymore.

So, just to make sure - do your font sizes reflect "real" size?

the bug still exists in kde 4.4 on kubuntu, using a german locale. in my kmailrc i find in the section geometry:

filterdialogsize=1187,512

i closed kmail, removed this and removed all filters. then i started kmail again. the entry filterdialogsize=1187,512 is created again.
Comment 16 Björn Ruberg 2010-02-12 17:07:55 UTC
Confirmed (for KDE 4.3.5). This depends on the font size. If I increase my fonts to 12 points, the filter window grows to over 1180 pixels width.
Comment 17 m.wege 2010-02-19 14:40:57 UTC
there may be a relation to bug #224037, because disabling nepomuk fixes the problem for me.
Comment 18 Janek Bevendorff 2012-08-18 11:59:02 UTC
Filter dialog in KMail2 (KIDE 4.9.0) is smaller than 1024x768 pixels and you can even make it smaller.
Therefore closing this as WORKSFORME.
