Version:           neznámý (using KDE 3.4.2, Mandrake Linux Cooker i586 - Cooker)
Compiler:          Target: i586-mandriva-linux-gnu
OS:                Linux (i686) release 2.6.11-12mdk

it should use kfmclient openURL %u instead of konqueror %u,
but really i don't know how it works, just guessing

middle clicking on an url will open it in a new konqueror tab.

so what? i have set the new tab behavior instead of new window, konversation should use the kfmclient to take users choosing into account.
and the middle clicking is default behavior for new window instead of new tab.

Works in 0.19 and trunk. Closing this report, please reopen if you can still reproduce it with 0.19 or newer.
