Description Martin Ellis 2005-10-19 19:09:04 UTC
Version: 1.2 (using KDE KDE 3.4.92)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages
OS: Linux

After upgrading from 3.4.3 to 3.5beta2, my custom keyboard shortcut for the 'Check Mail' command - Enter on the keypad - has stopped working.

(I specifically want KP_Enter as it's easy to hit without moving your hand off the mouse)

I've selected KP_Enter as the alternative shortcut for the command, and it works in KMail when run as a standalone application.
When I press it when using KMail within Kontact, it opens the current message in a new window (which I've never wanted to be able to do).

I've looked at the Kontact shortcuts, and KP_Enter doesn't seem to be listed, so I don't see that there's any conflict.

I also use the same button in KNode within Kontact to update newgroups, and in Akregator in Kontact to update feeds, and the shortcut works fine there.

Note that the Configure Shortcuts window still lets me select KP_Enter as a shortcut, even though it doesn't actually work.

Please restore the previous behaviour as it makes grabbing updates faster and would restore consistency across Kontact plugins.

KDE 3.5.5/Kontact 1.2.3 Kubuntu 6.10 (edgy) works for me. I was able to assign Enter as the shortcut to checking mail and the shortcut worked

Seems to be solved.

Martin,

Do you still see this problem?

I still see it on:
KDE: 3.5.2
KMail: 1.9.1

It might be Monday before I get to try something a bit more current.

OK, after adding the 3.5.5 packages to Dapper, I have:
KDE: 3.5.5, KMail: 1.9.5

I still see the problem in KMail within Kontact,
and it still works fine in 'standalone' KMail.

I notice though, that if I set no shortcut for the "Display Message" action
(it had defaulted to Enter), then the KP_Enter shortcut for "Check Mail"
_does_ work.

If I re-add Enter as a shortcut for "Display Message", then KP_Enter stops
working for "Check Mail" and behaves as "Display Message" again. Boo.

Did you have the Enter shortcut for "Display Message" when you tried to
reproduce?

FYI, I can also reproduce this on a Debian Sid machine.
(Again, KDE 3.5.5 and KMail 1.9.5)

Oops. Sorry for excessive posting on this bug...

It's not clear that the correct behaviour was tested here.

The bug refers to using KP_Enter - on the numeric keypad -
for Check Mail, with Enter as the shortcut for Display Message,
within Kontact.

Please re-open if this was not the behaviour that was tested.

Reopening as recommended by Robert Knight.

The quick fix for this would be to assign the shortcut you want to the normal Enter Key [Enter] and click ok - this will prompt to remove the shortcut for Enter to open message in new window, then you can re-assign it to KP_Enter (on the key pad (number pad).

I am not sure where the shortcut is assigned to the normal Enter key, but this does reset the behaviour

Perhaps the real bug is that the shortcut Enter effects they KP_Enter too, and is not overridden when KP_Enter is assigned to something else.

I hope this description helps.

I could assign and use KP_Enter for updating mail in kmail 1.1.0 embedded in kontact 1.3.0, so this seems to be fixed now.
Display message shortcut is still set to "Enter".
