I think in the list of mails there should be the correct mimetype icon instead of the attachment icon.
It would tell you "oh there's an attachment" just as the attachment icon (paper clip) does, but already tells you about the kind of attachment.

In case there are multiple attachments it could be the paperclip icon or the mimetype icon of the first attachment with an overlayed "+" or something.

I'm seeing mime icons in KDE 4.3
