Problem Area

The issue is with the ~/.kde/share/config/quantarc file, specifically the following two sections:

"List of autosaved files"
"List of backedup files"

Description of Problem
==============================

Quanta has one php page open.  The ~/.kde/share/config/quantrc file continues to write the the same line over and over again in the "List of autosaved files=" section.  It also writes the same entry over and over again in the "List of backedup files="

Steps to duplicate
=================================================

1. Install FreeBSD 5.4 or 5.4-Stable
2. Install kde-lite and kdewebdev from ports (version 3.4.2) (I saw this in previous version but I didn't report it - sorry.  In previous version I used a package instead of ports).
3. Open quanta and open one php page.
4. Leave the page open for some time (an hour or more)
5. Look at the quantarc file:

The line should not be reentered in "List of autosaved files" or "List of backedup files" if it already exists 


Workaround
================================
 - Delete the quantarc file every hour or two - or just before closing.
 - Deleting the quantarc does however, delete your quanta settings.
 - I found that if you delete the quantarc while still running quanta, then go to Settings > Configure Quanta and hit OK.  It rewrites a new quantarc (without the many lines).  You can then close quanta and reopen and the settings are still there.

One note: It doesn't start out crashing - it starts our causing momentary lags and hanging.  Then it will crash Quanta.  If quanta is closed before it crashes, it may never reopen until quantarc is deleted or the sections are cleared.

Another note:  Problem may be narrowed down to an untitled document.

It should have been obvious to me that I had a second untitled document open and it was the untitled document, not the php document that appears to have been caused the issue.

I tried to find this bug, but no luck. I don't have FreeBSD here and on Linux neither 3.4.1 nor 3.5 does show this bug.
One more question: was the untitled file empty or did you change it so that the icon changed to a floppy disk?
If it was just a new empty file the backup code should not create any backup at all and you should not see entries in quantarc.
Maybe a workaround could be to have no untitled documents open.

Sorry to take so long to respond.  The untitle file had a mysql string in it.

To test out if the text mattered I left an empty notepad document open.  It did NOT have this issue.  I typed in "asdfasdfasdf" into the document.  Issue started occurring started happening.

It actually occurrs anytime a file has unsaved data, whether it is an Untitled document or an open decument.

Only since I save often, it isn't seen as much.  But if I leave text unsaved for long amounts of time, quanta crashes.

SVN commit 579846 by amantia:

Fix a long-standing bug that I could finally somewhat reproduce, which caused growing of quantarc until it was too large to handle, caused by the automatic backup system.
Fix also other bugs in the auto-backup.
Change symlink handling, so paths are resolved after reading from config files. Hopefully it doesn't introduce new bugs.
