If I set an away nick in the profile dialog, then immediately go and mark myself away, the nick is properly changed to the away nick.  However, when going back into the profile, the away nick field is now empty, and future attempts at marking the user away do not change the nick.

I am unable to reproduce this behaviour. A similar bug has recently been fixed, namely correctly storing the away nick while switching tabs in the Identities dialog. This may have taken care of your trouble. How recent is your SVN checkout?
