Me to, after a fresh install of Kubuntu 5.10 it worked, made a few other installs, a reboot, and now none of the device icon will show up. This is with KDE 3.4.2 too.
I think this is related to bug # 127971 http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=127971
Kdesktop is no more mantained. Fortunatly this bug seems not to be valid for KDE 4. Please reopen if this bug is not a kdesktop one (and it is not solved) or it can be reproduced on KDE 4.
Bug closed. Kdesktop is no more mantained.
