Description S. Burmeister 2005-08-04 20:55:14 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.4.2)
OS: Linux

If one wants to select some images with the mouse, this is quite hard, because nearly all space in the right pane is linked to opening pictures. One has to find a tiny spot inbetween the pictures which is not part of an image's frame to click and draw the frame to select pictures. It would be very useful, if selecting/opening pictures would work like in konqueror.

To open the picture one clicks on the picture/thumbnail. To select it, one clicks on its information, i.e. in digikam's case the white space around the thumbnail itself.

This way one could easily select images in the middle of the right pane by drawing a frame.

Forgot to mention:
If one just wants to select a single image, at the moment one has to press the CTRL-button, or draw a frame. Thus it would be helpful to be able to just select the image by clicking next to the thumbnail.

I would suggest that clicking on the border area around the thumbnail selects the image, while only clicking immediately on the thumbnail (indicated by a changed cursor) actually opens the image editor.
Single click vs. double click is taken from KDE's setting which is principally good.

Your suggestion is exactly what I meant, using the space between the picture and the border as selection-space. Just yesterday I wanted to select one picture right in the middle of the right pane to rotate it (why are there no default shortcuts for rotating?) and had to point the mouse exactly at the tiny space between two borders. With the suggestion implemented, I would just have to click somewhere within the borders, just not the picture, and press 1 to rotate.

I agree it is a problem in digiKam. I always set my KDE to doubleclick because I think single click is not very usable.

BTW, there is also a discussion going on to solve this issue in KDE4. See for example http://aseigo.blogspot.com/2005/08/ahoy-manyoso.html

Click on actual thumbnail opens image, click on border selects it

I look forward to Aaron Seigo suggesting a solution for KDE in general.
In the meantime, here is a short patch to demonstrate my suggestion.

Tom, can you try this patch please. I'm currently busy with image editor selection patch (http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=110514)

Thanks in advance

What about introducing this feature to konqueror's and the desktop's icon-view? Those views do also have space around their icons/thumbnails which could be used as a selection area. Of course, having a frame around an icon is more obvious to mediate the "click-here-to-select"-feature but this could be solved by either displaying such a frame when hovering the icons, or changing the background around them when hovering.

Would that solve the single-/double-click problem for you Tom?

I filed it as a wishlist-item: bug 115461.

Thanks for implementing this!

I think the new behavior in 0.8.0 is ok, but OTOH its a pitty that digiKam uses exclusive selection only and you still have to use Ctrl or Shift for a multiple selection. This really nice single click style cries for multiple inclusive selection!
