Description Hertz 2005-06-28 07:11:26 UTC
Version: (using KDE 3.3.2, (3.1))
Compiler: gcc version 3.3.6 (Debian 1:3.3.6-5)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.8-2-686

Currently I'm using Debian Sarge with ru_RU.KOI8-R KOI8-R
locales settings. The user's faces won't appear in the KDM. Only a thin bar is visible which has no place even for the user's names. This bug present not only in Debian, however for example in Mandrake it' not present and the faces are visible.

have you tried to re-configure the face assignments with the control center?
if this does not work, how is the FaceDir setting in kdmrc?

does it work better if you purge the kdm package with all the config files and re-install it?
Comment 2 Hertz 2005-07-04 10:02:25 UTC
I've tried every possible settings in kdmrc (admin, admin-user, user-admin,
user), but there is still no faces. My kdmrc file does not include a any
FaceDir settings (this by default, because I've not edited this file
manually). But I can choose faces in Kcontrol, so kdm must know where to find
them. As I know there is only two distributions which are able to show faces
- SuSE (configurable in Kcontrol without any problems; well it's true about
suse 9.1 with kde 3.2 because I have not tried newer versions) and Mandrake
(configurable within drakconf, kde 3.3). Maybe they use some patches? Any
other disributions I've tried (for example Slackware 10.1) fails to show
faces in kdm.
When I have started kdm for the first time there was a place for the users
name, since I was able to see the name of my default user, but after changing
some settings in Kcontrol (theme, autologin, locale, faces) even the names
became invisible and there is a place maximum for one letter in the place
where the names and/or faces should be. Since I was able to set up faces in
other distributions (described above) without any problems, I doubt that it's
my fault.

does /var/log/kdm.log say anything about being unable to load images/pixmaps?
does kdm show any logo when configured to do so?

yes, suse's kdm is heavily patched in this area.
Comment 4 Hertz 2005-07-08 14:12:14 UTC
The text below is from my /var/log/kdm.log file. I've deleted all the previous
content of this file then restarted X. Faces enabled in Kcontrol.
Yes. KDM show a logo, clock, etc. without any problems. Only the left side of
the greeting window seems have a non-correct size and therefore have no place
for faces.
I've find only one line in /var/log/syslog: Jul 4 09:39:13 localhost
kdm_greet[4193]: Can't open default user face.
But there was only one log of that kind. Currently kdm set to "admin-user
faces" mode.

yes, that's the key ... and i have no idea how to go further.
i just committed a patch that would help debugging, but then you'd have to compile from svn.
Comment 6 Hertz 2005-07-28 07:21:33 UTC
If I reset the kdmrc settings with genkdmconf the user's faces become visible, but after change some settings in Kcontrol's kdm module the faces disappear. Looks like the gui tool do something wrong with the configuration.
Comment 7 Hertz 2005-07-28 07:29:43 UTC
And there is no matter what changes I try to apply in that case in Kcontrol
module (autologin, guistyle, etc.) the faces just disappear.

mind creating a diff -u between the two files? but please grep -v '^#' the one from genkdmconf first.
