Description Dominik Stadler 2005-06-19 10:43:14 UTC
Version: 2.4.1 (using KDE KDE 3.4.1)
Installed from: Gentoo Packages
Compiler: gcc-3.4.3
OS: Linux

Kate already remembers open files if it is closed normally, but as I usually have it running for days without restarting, I often have the situation that either kate crashes or hangs for some obscure reason (no clear reason that I could report, sometimes it might be related to some recompiles in the background in Gentoo) or the whole machine becomes unresponsive for some reason and needs to be hard-reset without proper reboot.

In this case, kate does not remember the open files that were open when it crashes/was killed. It seems it only writes the list of open files upon shutdown.

Also any new file that I created but did not save yet is gone in this case.

Therefore I would like to ask for a feature that remembers open files also when kate crashes/hangs/gets killed, not just when kate is shut down. Additionally it would be very nice if kate would remember newly created files that were not saved yet.

For example, kmail already does a similar thing with mails, if I start to write an email, but KMail crashes, it opens the mail exactly as it was before when I restart kmail.

Note, that contrary / in addition to bug #103234 , this ask for auto-save of the session, not (only) of the files.

In particular, sessions should be automatically saved periodically. Kate seems to assume it will always be shut down cleanly and only saves the session then. Many applications behave this way, and this is a huge pet peeve of mine. My system (or software) crashes far more often than it gets shut down properly. I'm sure most of us don't spend 10 hours working on a document before ever saving it, so why do applications treat configuration and session data like this? It's about time modern software is written with more of a "crash-only" philosophy.

Dear user,

this wish list item is now closed, as it wasn't touched in the last two years and no contributor stepped up to implement it.

The Kate/KTextEditor team is very small and we can just try to keep up with fixing bugs. Therefore wishs that show no activity for two years or more will be closed from now on to keep at least a bit overview about 'current' wishs of the users.

If you want your feature to be implemented, please step up to provide some patch for it. If you think it is really needed, you can reopen your request, but keep in mind, if no new good arguments are made and no people get attracted to help out to implement it, it will expire in two years again.

We have a nice website kate-editor.org that provides all the information needed to contribute, please make use of it. For highlighting improvements our user manual shows how to write syntax definition files.

Greetings
Christoph
