Description B. Clayton 2005-06-13 20:48:45 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.4.0)
Installed from: FreeBSD Ports
OS: FreeBSD

kmoon's phase appears to be two or three days behind the actual phase of the moon. When the moon is three days old, kmoon is still completely dark. When the moon is very close to 1st quarter, kmoon is still a thin crescent. Yes, my system clock is set to the right date. :)
Comment 1 Stephan Kulow 2005-06-14 16:24:02 UTC
indeed, somehow the display is f*** ;(
Comment 2 Stephan Kulow 2005-06-15 09:19:30 UTC
my reference is here btw: http://stardate.org/nightsky/moon/
Comment 3 Stephan Kulow 2005-06-15 15:24:16 UTC
ok, the reference itself is broken. The tooltip is right, so it's just the graphics that are wrong.
Comment 4 B. Clayton 2005-06-17 06:37:23 UTC
my reference was just looking outside in the evening. :) The phase tonight still appears to be a couple of days ahead of kmoon.
Comment 5 Stephan Kulow 2005-06-17 11:51:03 UTC
ahead of kmoon? I have the other problem: kmoon shows almost full moon, but the real moon is shortly after first quarter
Comment 6 B. Clayton 2005-06-18 09:32:20 UTC
That is odd. is it showing some random variation depending on the phase, or the timezone?

It also seems to be hard to find two websites on the net that agree on the phase of the moon. Many use the same images used in kmoon. Here's one from the USNO that I'd expect to be accurate:

Comment 7 Stephan Kulow 2005-06-20 09:42:10 UTC
today my kmoon looks reasonable. But I'm afraid it's already at descending ;)

That 22nd has a full moon can be considered safe, it's just the graphics that are wrong in kmoon (and some web moon calendars)
Comment 8 B. Clayton 2005-08-26 08:22:36 UTC
Will this bug be fixed for 3.5? Perhaps the code for the graphics can be rolled back to that used in 3.3, which displayed the phase correctly.
Comment 9 B. Clayton 2006-02-05 04:14:59 UTC
this bug still exists in 3.5.1.
Comment 10 B. Clayton 2006-07-01 10:46:56 UTC
Still exists in 3.5.3. tooltip info correct, but phase appears to be about 36-48 hrs behind the USNO site.
Comment 11 B. Clayton 2007-02-05 23:11:49 UTC
Still exists in 3.5.5.

Is there any point asking about this? This bug hasn't been touched in over a year.
Comment 12 Stephan Kulow 2007-02-06 11:47:38 UTC
There is little chance that this bug fixes itself without someone updating the graphics
Comment 13 Clive Rogers 2007-06-09 11:29:37 UTC
Kmoon in SuSE 9 and 9.2 were correct but in 10 and 10.2 are behind in the graphics. Checking the images stored in /opt/kde3/share/apps/kmoon/pics and the images in the kapplet the images in the kapplet jumped from moon20.png to moon 25.png in the space of 1 day. Please fix this bug ASAP. As an amateur astronomer I rely on correct information.

Regards,
Clive Rogers.

I compared the image files between 3.3 and 3.5 and found that the phases do not match between the two sets of icons. Reverting back to the 3.3 set should fix most of the problems, although Clive's comments would indicate a programmic issue exists as well.

KMoon is unmaintained. (I asked its author)
Closing bug report.
