Description Iñaki Baz Castillo 2005-04-24 23:35:31 UTC
Version: desconocido (using KDE 3.4.0, Debian Package 4:3.4.0-0pre4 (3.1))
Compiler: gcc version 3.3.5 (Debian 1:3.3.5-8)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.10

I open "Sound and multimedia" - "System notifications", and press in "Player settings".
I hace selected "Use the KDE sound system" and the volume in 100%.
If I set the volumen in a minor value KDE notifications don't sound.

For example:

Set the volume in 90% and prees OK.
In "System notifications" look for Kopete Messenger" and select "An incoming message has been received".
Push in the "play" buttom to play the "Kopete_User_is_Online.ogg" file.
It doesn't sound.

Now go again to "Player settings" and set the volume to 100%. Press OK.
Now try to reproduce the "Kopete_User_is_Online.ogg" file.
It sounds.

So, the sound only works if the volume is set to 100% in "Player settings".

I'm almost 100% certain that I reported this bug for KDE 3.2, or maybe an early version of KDE 3.3. Don't know if that bug was officially fixed, but it works again in KDE 3.3.2. Another detail that I remember is that this bug was triggered only for notification sounds in OGG/Vorbis format. Can anyone check that out?

I have this same problem with KDE 3.4. If I change the volume to anything but 100% in "player settings", I get no sound. Change it back to 100%, I get sound again. This is very annoying because I want to listen to my music at high volume, but not have the dang notification messages at high volume.

Exactly the same problem with kde 3.4 (gentoo).
Comment 4 Pieter 2005-05-24 17:34:33 UTC
I can confirm that this bug only effects OGG/Vorbis sounds, wav's sound OK with the volume at less than 100%

Pieter: What backend do you use? If setting the volume ever works, JuK is doing its job right. ;) The fact that it doesn't work on Ogg Vorbis means your backend has a problem for some reason.

You can tell what backend you're using by going to the Settings menu and looking at the Output To submenu. If there is no Output To submenu you're using aRts.

I'm using the arts and i can confirm the described bug. WAV-Sounds are working correctly. Ogg only works if the volume is at 100%.

Arts is no longer developed and has been unmaintained for quite some time - more than 2 years. With phonon as the replacement for arts in KDE4, we're closing out all the arts bugs in Bugzilla since there is no chance of them being fixed.

Thanks
