Description Thomas Hoffmann 2005-04-17 21:58:37 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.2.1)
Installed from: SuSE RPMs
Compiler: gcc 3.3.3
OS: Linux

artsd crashes for some days now since I did change some setting for the system sounds. When trying to configure the sound system the system sometimes lockes hard, needing a cold reboot (neither Ctrl-Alt-Del nor any other key combinations work).
The only special about my setup is that I use an ESS1938 for sound and have via82xx onboard sound (unused, but started as boot.msg showes: "Starting sound driver: es1938 via82xx es1938done".

The backtrace from kde crash manager says:

Same problem with artsd (104093) from SuSE 9.3 installation DVD, version 1.4.0-10.
Sound IC: AMD-768 Audio
The error does not crash the system, just posts an X-Windows notice every hour or so (random interval, I think).
Running smp with 2 Athon +2400 processors, 2G RAM.
Log results:

Comment 3 Klaus P. Kuhlemann 2005-11-12 10:57:45 UTC
This appears still in kde 3.5 rc1 immediatly after install without open dependencies.
Setting the sondsystem priority down in the control-center from realtime and the quality down from 16 bit to standard, the start of the soundserver succeds.

I believe, that it's noatun which causes the crashes. After uninstalling of noatun and its 3 dependend packages (kdemultimedia-video, kdemultimedia-video-xine, kdemultimedia-extra, kdeaddons-sound) because noatun couldn't play mp3's, the soundserver run normally in 15bit and realtime setting.
This exists since 3.5 beta 2. In the beta, a workarond was possible downgrading the 4 packages to 3.4.3, this didn't succeed in 3.5 rc1.

Sorry that i didn't save the system messages. AmakoK didn't play files, too, while these packages were installed and worked fine after uninstall of noatun and restart of kde.
Comment 4 Axel Braun 2005-12-02 11:07:29 UTC
Unfortunately I cant confirm that this workaround works: I upgraded yesterday to KDE 3.5 and arts 1.5.0-5. Since then artsd crashes immediately when a system-sound should be played.
