Description Nathan Olberding 2005-04-07 00:07:18 UTC
Version: 3.4 (using KDE KDE 3.4.0)
Installed from: Slackware Packages
OS: Linux

Please refile this report if it's not a Kwin bug. I have an nVidia GeForce4MX 4000. For Composite, it's recommended that the Option "RenderAccel" be set to "true". With this setting, though, KDE freezes while loading. The spashscreen pops up momentarily, then disappears, and only a small rectangular part of the bottom portion of the splash remains visible. The keyboard is completely locked up, so ctrl+alt+bkspc doesn't work, nor does ctrl+alt+del. The mouse still works perfectly, without studdering, but without the keyboard, I have to hard-reset the box.

I have no other WM's or DE's installed, so I can't test others, but a little googling shows that I'm definitely not the only one with this problem, and it seems limited to KDE 3.4, particularly when built with Konstruct or when using Slackware packages from Slackware -current (though some say Slackware packages from kde.org work fine).

That seems to be a problem in the nvidia driver, the application hangs in one of the XRANDR functions waiting for an answer from the X server, which is stuck. Report your problem to nVidia.
