Description Daniel Quinn 2005-04-01 02:30:02 UTC
Version: 2.4 (using KDE 3.4.0, Gentoo)
Compiler: gcc version 3.4.3-20050110 (Gentoo Linux 3.4.3.20050110-r1, ssp-3.4.3.20050110-0, pie-8.7.7)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.10-gentoo-r6

In KDE3.3 and lower, you could move the "Filesystem Browser" panel to the left side, and then move the "Documents" panel to the left as well, placing it *under* the Filesystem Browser. This is no longer the current behaviour. Instead, dragging the Documents panel to the lower left, gives you the outline, hinting that it would place itself *below* the Filesystem browser, but when you release the mouse button, the Brower turns into a tab and the Documents window now takes up the entire left side.

However, if you click the little up-left arrow in the same panel, un-docking the documents panel from the Kate main window and creating a separate window, you can then drag the Browser panel into the new window and it places itself above or below the Documents Panel. Unfortunately though, at this point, you can't drag the two windows together back into the main layout.

Please confirm with me that this is a bug and not a feature... I simply can't function easily with one panel taking up the entire left side of the screen.

This is how the IDEAL interface works, so it's a feature. You can assign a
shortcut to each toolview, I use that to show the view I want all the time.

Well if that's the case, I'd like to make it a WISH to make the old functionality available again. Running at 1600x1200, there's no need for Either of those panels to take up the entire side and lots of reasons to allow them to share it. I like to be able to see what files are open and what directory I'm in at the same time -- this can't be a unique thing.

I agree that Tab Page Mode should be added once again. Kate is one of KDE's primary attractions for me. I also run at 1600x1200 and have layout like so:

http://culthero.org/stuff/kate.png

This layout simply isn't possible with IDEAL mode. Furthermore IDEAL mode does not allow me to hide the buttons that I have no intention of using such as "Terminal" or "Find in Files." After doing a search on Google for more information I can tell you that Anders Lund and I are not the only two that used this mode.

Can anyone explain why Tab Page Mode was removed? Was there some kind of technical reason? Since I started using KDE 3 both modes have been available. Is there a good reason for taking away functionality that was previously available?

This is one of the things that I don't know of. I believe the wish for sharing
a side area between several toolviews is very valid. Cullmann?

yes, valid wish, but this has to been solved at the library level

hello,

what is the status of this bug? i really think seeing the currently open files and the file browser at the same time in the left column is a desirable feature. most gui editors allow this.

i upgraded to a newer version of kde/kate and couldn't believe that this is not possible anymore.

cheers

Fixed a while ago with the new format used to display the menus:

First, right-click on a tab and move it to the side you want.
Second, right-click on the same tab and select "Make-persistent"
Third, left-click your second (or third!) tab on the same side and they will share the side.

Sorry it's taken me so long to close this bug.

hi,

this procedure doesn't work for me. was this fixed for kate 2.4.1 (kde
3.4.3) already? i couldn't find the related bug for this.

this bug seems related: #64976
Comment 10 Daniel Quinn 2006-03-21 16:48:11 UTC
It's fixed as of KDE 3.5 for sure. I can't speak to previous versions.
