Description Robert 2005-03-04 14:25:13 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.4.0)
Installed from: Gentoo Packages
OS: Linux

Sometimes when I click the k-menu (or any of my custom made menus in the panel), their position will be a little off. This is clearly a cosmetic thing but it looks a little awkward this way.

Usually their position is (for the k-menu) on the very left of the screen, starting at the top of the panel. Sometimes their position changes a bit, it seems to depend on where I clicked with the mouse. Sometimes they actually appear at the bottom of the screen, which is about 40 px below their usual position.

This is not reliably reproducible.

I do have menu animations enabled, if that matters (the menus scroll in from the top left of their final position)

your kickerrc and even some screenshots attached to this bug would be great.

and when you say you are using "3.4.0" ..... are you using rc1? or the BRANCH from CVS, or...?

There you go. The screenshot is fake, i.e. I made it in gimp. But that's really what it looks like. The visual artifacts (background and shadows) are from gimp, the visuals are correct when the bug occurs (except for the menu position).

I use kde 3.4 rc1. Sorry for not making that clear.
Comment 5 Aaron J. Seigo 2005-03-05 03:54:46 UTC
what is your screen resolution?

is the menu aligned with the top of the screen, or...?
Comment 6 Robert 2005-03-05 11:33:54 UTC
My screen resolution is 1400x1050.

No, the menu is not aligned with the top of the screen. I think its lower edge is where the mouse has clicked on the panel, but I'm really not sure. The vertical position is different every time the bug occurs. Sometimes the menu is on the very bottom of the screen.
Comment 7 Aaron J. Seigo 2005-03-08 04:29:13 UTC
does this only happen the first time you open any given menu, or sometimes on the second, third, etc time you open a menu?

> Usually their position is (for the k-menu) on the very left of the screen

this sounds exactly like http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=85957
Comment 8 Robert 2005-03-08 11:57:41 UTC
> does this only happen the first time you open any given menu,

This happens spontaneously, I haven't been able to recognize any pattern. It happens every once in a while. I always try to reproduce the actions / mouse clicks I made before it occured but haven't been able to yet.

Also note that the vertical position of the menu changes from time to time: Sometimes it's aligned with the bottom of the screen, sometimes it's a little further up (like on the screenshot I posted above).
Comment 9 Kevin Goeser 2005-03-11 11:45:43 UTC
Same problem here, this occurs at the "recent documents" and quickbrowser menus, too (also rc1).
Comment 10 Kevin Goeser 2005-04-30 23:40:34 UTC
With 3.4.0 (final) I didn't see that happen again for the KMenu. But it still happens quite often with the recent documents menu.
Comment 11 Aaron J. Seigo 2005-05-26 00:48:51 UTC
@Kevin: what OS are you using?

@all: what version of Qt?

Comment 13 Kevin Goeser 2005-05-26 11:32:56 UTC
I'm using Linux 2.6.9 (Gentoo), with qt 3.3.4.
Comment 14 Tim Hutt 2005-05-26 11:59:17 UTC
I also get exactly the same bug. For me it appears wherever the mouse-up event was. I have a feeling it is to do with clicking outside the K and then releasing inside it, but it is still impossible to intentionally induce.

It is different from bug 85957.
Comment 15 Robert 2005-05-26 15:13:11 UTC
My qt version was 3.3.3.

Comment 17 Rohan Beckles 2005-08-10 02:40:30 UTC
For me this bug occurs most frequently when I have first started KDE and click on the K for the first time. However, during the use of KDE, this bug will re-occur, but with no definable usage pattern. For me, the K menu appears at the correct height in relation to the K button, but in the extreme left of my screen.

My QT is 3.3.2, compiled from sources. My KDE is stable release 3.4.2, also compiled from sources. My compiler at the time was GCC 3.2.2 My screen resolution is 1280x1024.

May I also add that my Kicker is centred, and set at 50% of screen width, and is set to expand as needed. It is aslo set to hide immediately the mouse leaves it. Also, my K is not in the default location (left end of Kicker), but is more centred - to the right of the Desktop Previewer & Pager, the Taskbar and the Lock/Logout applet.

Rohan: is your self-compiled Qt patched for this bug?
Comment 20 Aaron J. Seigo 2005-08-10 07:02:24 UTC
yes, rohan's bug is a different one to this bug and is fixed with the menu patch distributed with qt-copy.
Comment 21 Robert 2006-03-19 15:11:24 UTC
I'm using kde 3.5.1 (qt 3.3.5) now and haven't been able to reproduce this bug anymore.
Comment 22 Aaron J. Seigo 2006-03-19 18:28:14 UTC
Kevin: have you upgraded to 3.5, and if so can you confirm Robert's report of the problem going away?
Comment 23 Kevin Goeser 2006-03-19 18:45:42 UTC
I'm using kde 3.5.1 and qt-3.3.4-r8 (gentoo package) at the moment. It doesn't happen anymore with the start-menue, but it still happens (quite rarely) with the recent documents menu :-/
Comment 24 Marc Collin 2006-04-15 05:44:41 UTC
i have this bug with kde 3.5.1
Comment 25 Kristian Gavran 2006-04-25 01:34:37 UTC
I can confirm this position issue, too. Shot attached

KDE menu wrong placement

KDE 3.5.2; QT 3.3.6; Kernel 2.6.16

This error occures only the first time I klick on the Kmenu button. The second
time everything works fine.
Comment 27 Robert 2006-04-25 09:15:09 UTC
Especially regarding comment #26: I think this is a different issue than I reported originally... The original bug was about the vertical placement being wrong, not horizontal. Please have a look at the (fake) screenshot I posted in comment #2.
Maybe the two things are related, I can't tell.
Comment 28 Thiago Macieira 2006-04-27 00:25:57 UTC
Kristian (comment #26): your problem is bug 80072. You need to patch Qt.
Comment 29 A. Spehr 2009-05-23 04:37:56 UTC
Kicker is currently unmaintained, you can look to your distribution for help, however.
