Description monstermunch 2005-03-01 18:56:02 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.3.0)
Installed from: SuSE RPMs
OS: Linux

I would like to request that the KOrganiser Alarm Daemon should not create an entry in the system tray. Firstly, KDE and Linux in general runs many programs in the background to create a complete desktop environment (e.g. KMilo, cups) and none of these have system tray icons. Therefore, giving one for the alarm daemon is not consistent with this (an important usability guideline). I don't see why a normal user would ever want to turn off the alarm daemon themselves anyway. If they did (because they didn't use Kontact), it would be a one off thing so it seems pointless to take up a system tray entry for this as system tray icons should be for very frequently accessed programs/controls or for notification and the daemon is neither of these. It should be moved into KControl in my opinion.

Additionally, I have seen people click this system tray icon to launch korganiser in the way that they would launch juk and kopete. However, korganiser does not minimise to the system tray like juk and kopete do so this it is again being inconstistent with the rest of the desktop. I know we can hide system tray icons as of 3.4, but there is really no logical reason for it to be there as far as I can see.

So you have never held a presentation on your laptop? You definitly don't want
any alarms to appear during that time, so you need an easy way to turn off
the alarm functionality for that time, and afterwards turn it on again.
That's about the only reason why the alarm daemon still has a systray icon.

Cheers,
Reinhold

OK, I didn't consider this. Seeing as some people might turn alarms on/off occasionally, would it be feasible to provide an option for showing/hiding the system tray icon and also place an alarm on/off function inside of KOrganiser (such as in the preferences)?

I see your point, but I don't use alarms very often and I've never felt the need to turn off alarms in presentations. I know that's just me, but the icon's function just doesn't seem important and widely used enough to me to have a system tray icon. It just seems a little odd as it doesn't work in the same way as, say, Kopete and Juk because the icon isn't the application itself but a preference modifier for the application, yet it still launches KOrganizer.

Thinking about it, I wouldn't mind if Kontact had it's own system tray icon which would hide/show Kontact like Kopete and that alarm on/off function was in there.

I second this - the extra icon is clutter. I have 6 icons down there when I'm running nothing, plus kwalletmanager pops its head up too. It's getting like Windows! (Those six are: laptop monitor, korganizer daemon, clipboard, volume, gaim, skype).

Another thing that seems to me to be bloat is the fact that there are separate daemons for korganizer alerts and kalarm alerts - couldn't these be combined into a single KDE alert daemon, usable by all applications?

well, I agree that we should get one option to disable the systray icon.
I use and love korganizer, but I don't use alarms at all, so I don't need one more icon.

same over here, i really like korganizer but i really don't like the alarm daemon. why is the is the alarm daemon forced on korganizer users? please make it optional because it's very frustrating.

i have disabled korganizer in kontact because i don't want the alarm daemon, however the problem is worse than i thought; the alarm daemon is started when i start kontact without korganizer enabled!!

should i create a new bugreport for the "alarm-daemon-is-started-but-korganizer-is-disabled-in-kontact-bug"?

i hope i don't sound harsh, english is not my native language, i really like korganizer, thanks a lot for this great program!

Reassigning all KOrganizer bug reports and wishes to the newly created
korganizer-devel mailing list.

In KDE 4.1 there is an option in KOrganizer to not show the icon in the systray.

Look in KOrganizer Settings -> General -> System Tray tab

So I'm closing this.
