In newer versions (3.2 and after), kghostview will pop up an error message and the output from gs if there is an error. In stable releases (like 3.1.2 coming soon) we don't add any new user-visible messages so that translators can do their work. Therefore, we can't really fix this decently in that version. Therefore, unless I misunderstood your request, this has been reported and marked as fixed in Bug 56521 and its brothers.
