Problem 1: I cannot make heads or tails of it. You say you have a crash. In what KDE program does it happen? What exactly do you do to make it crash? What KDE version is it? And please try a recent version of KDE as well (3.1.1). Problem 2: does the file /usr/src/linux/config.in exist? If it doesn't, you must have not installed the necessary packages in your Mandrake. Not a KDE problem. Subject: Re: reproducable installation failure - message ". . . just found a bug in the kde kernel configurator." Sunday, 30 March 2003 Good Day Thiago Maciera . . . Thank You for the reply. The problem is I do not know what the problem is! I am not a techie at linux. Problem 1: The problem is visible in desktop. The problem shows in control centre. The problem shows in login. You tell me which application is affected? The actual crash occurs at login. I login as root and get a busy cursor for about a minute and then a total operating system failure. The version is 3.1. I am not technologically advanced enough to upgrade a particular application nor do I want to since I just downloaded this version. Problem 2: The file does not exist. The display reports . . . /linux//config.in . . . not . . . /linux/config.in . . . . Please note the added forward slash. It may make a difference. The installation was done about ten times from two different iso locations and from no added applications to every application. The result was the same. The symptom is kde but the cause may be something else either the linux kernel configuration or the mandrake packaging. I asked for help to find out the problem. Please offer me some educated help so that I can continue to find the problem. I Thank You for your attention to this matter. Paul Michael Bateson My message asked for help. If you have problems and you need help with, please try and find a mailing list or chat channel to solve your doubts. Post here only symptoms you believe to be bugs. As for your config.in problem, you simply forgot to install a package in your system. It is NOT a bug. And double forward slashes don't make a difference. As for your first problem, I still don't understand it. For me, it seems you're describing several different failures. Please describe, instead, what was running when nothing was wrong, what state things were in and what exactly you did that triggered the problem. Subject: Re: reproducable installation failure - message ". . . just found a bug in the kde kernel configurator." Sunday, 30 March 2003 Good Day Thiago Maceira . . . Thank You for the reply. Para One: I realise that this is probably not your domain but can you pass on the probable package that was not installed? A few times, I chose all packages for installation. The loading should have installed all the necessary packages. Para Two: It is difficult to compose a response to <what was running when nothing was wrong.> kde defaulted to something wrong. kde's normal mode is <something wrong.> It starts with <something wrong.> This is the best that I can say. The several different failures are symptons of a problem. I am describing several symptons of a problem. I sure hope that this is only one problem. The symptons appeared after I loaded linux. I do not want to appear facitious but it is that simple. The symptons are visible as a user login on the desktop. I do nothing other than login. No applications are loaded by me after the gui appears. When the desktop appears the symptons appear. I cannot open a desktop application by a click. I tried a double-click but no open. A right-click and Open . . . starts the application. The menu items generate properly started kde applications. The kde control centre appears as normal. Everything seems to work until I try to modify a root property. Then the errors appear. In the terminal the su command does what it is supposed to do. I become the root user. root opens the login manager in control centre. The root login did not appear at first until I moved about the control centre and found an option to make root visible as a menu item. When I clicked on root at login, a busy cursor appeared for about one minute then a total operating system failure. This may sound over simplified but the symptons were triggered by starting kde. If this is a package problem then it is a fundamental basic package that is not being loaded. It is one of the main configuration packages. This is possible but not probable. I really appreciate your assistance. I Thank You for your attention to this matter. All other problems seem to be Mandrake specific. You can try Mandrake bug system located @ https://qa.mandrakesoft.com/ yes, the problem with the kernel config not working is that you haven't installed the kernel sources. other problems are almost guaranteed to be an installation/packaging issue and not a KDE issue. there are several good Mandrake user support email lists one can subscribe to. i am closing this bug report now. |
