Version: (using KDE KDE 3.2.1) Installed from: Gentoo Packages Compiler: gcc 3.3.2 OS: Linux Ok, this is very funny!! As the title says the size of the Kmenu changes with time, actually with the number of times I click on K (I think so, but I am not sure). When, I first enter in KDE, the width of Kmenu is normal, but then it increases!!! If this does not make sense to you I will try to upload a screenshot. Thank you, Vasilis
Created attachment 5211 [details] The Kmenu You look at the Kmenu, which has stretched a little bit. You also see the menu of the games which has a normal width.
Created attachment 5212 [details] Normal And now ... it is normal. I did not do anything!!!
Created attachment 5233 [details] It is huge!!!!!!!! I let the image speak for itself

The patch listed here: http://lists.kde.org/?l=kde-cvs&m=108055728218204&w=2 Which I assume is the fix you talked about, doesn't work. While the menu isn't actually being drawn larger anymore, it is still getting larger. Look at this: http://mywebpages.comcast.net/epyon9283/kdebug.jpg Notice how the menu is separated like that and how the main menu looks strangely cut off. I'm using KDE 3.2.1 with QT 3.3.1-r1 both installed from Gentoo packages.

Does anybody still see this with qt-copy/patches/0047-fix-kmenu-width.diff 1.3?
Yes, upgraded to qt-copy as for 0422. And the issue is still there. Kde 3.2.2 qt-3.3.1 (20040422) kde-redhat-project binaries.
*** Bug 80184 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
Pär, the qt-copy 20040422 kde-redhat package you mention was obviously build before I committed 0047-fix-kmenu-width.diff 1.3, so your answer doesn't help.
FYI, the kde-redhat qt pkgs were updated from cvs immediately after comment #10 was posted. cvs'uping now shows that patch has indeed changed (again), so I'll go rebuild things...
Thanks, qt-copy 20040423 seems to have fixed things.

Where can I get the qt-copy 20040423. Is this only available in rpm format? Could someone give directions on how to apply this patch. Thank you
you'll have to check it out from kde's cvs. the module name is qt-copy
Upgraded to qt-3.3.2 (which is qt-copy 20040506). Kde-redhat project qt packages on redhat 9. The problem is back! The menu arrows is gone again. Especially with keramik style. It worked with qt-copy 20040423 though. Decreasing the number of recently used applications in top of the startmenu to 0 solve the problem, like before.
For the record, I cannot reproduce the problem using qt-copy-20040506, (kdelibs-3.2.2), on Fedora Core 1 and RedHat 9. I tried both Keramik and Plastik, and with both, the menu's arrows display as expected.
Not here. And i´m not alone. See mail to kde-redhat-users mailing list. Have all kde-redhat updates; new kdelibs-3.2.2-3.1.rh90.kde and qt-3.3.2. Plastik works but the arrows is too near the edge. Keramik don´t work at all. It´s like before. I don´t know what it is though, but it´s clear that something differ in qt in this new version from qt-copy 20040423.
I've gotta ditto this bug. I'm running gentoo 2004.1, kde 3.2.2, qt 3.3.0. The bug only occurs in one of the user accounts on this machine. This look of the menu is as in: http://mywebpages.comcast.net/epyon9283/kdebug.jpg , listed above by Tom Kiermaier in comment #7.
Ditto from me, running kde 3.2.2 and QT 3.3.2 from Gentoo.
I just updated KDE to 3.2.2 and I am seeing the same problem as the one described in comment 22 and 23. I also have qt 3.3.2 and I run Gentoo. BTW, I am using keramik style
Yeah, fresh install of kde cvs and qt-copy and i saw the bug but applying the patch from comment 10 fixed it.
The patch that fixed this from 20040422 are now different again with qt-copy later than 20040430 as described in cvs. Therefore this is not working for certain systems. I´m using a system with qt-copy later than 20040506 and this behaviour is still there. I don´t know why. But the patch has changed, that is true. With patch from 20040422 it worked here.

When unchecking "Show side image", the arrows reappear at the right of the menu, but when checking back "Show side image", the side image does not come back. Don't know if it is related. Using KDE 3.2.2 & QT 3.3.2.
This bug is still present in KDE 3.2.3 (Official Fedora 2 packages) - in fact it's worse than in KDE 3.2.2 - I don't see the arrows any more.
Well, I didn't see the arrows in 3.2.2 either (both Slackware 9.1 and Suse 9.1), and I still don't see them in 3.2.3.
I've noticed this bug exists also in KDE 3.1.4 when using with qt 3.3.2 (both installed from Slackware packages). After fresh installation the menu is ok, but then when I change Look&Feel->Style the arrows are not visible. I checked out KDE 3.2.90 CVS 20040117 and there the menu problem doesn't exist (also with qt 3.3.2).

I am confirming that this bug persists in KDE 3.2.3 using QT 3.3.2. Sometimes the KDE Start Menu arrows are there, sometimes they are not. When the arrows are NOT there, the submenu that appears has a gap between itself and the main Start Menu.
Confirming the existance of this bug in KDE 3.3.0-beta1. Could it have something to do with "Most Used Applications"?
I have this too (I mean, the main menu not having right arrows and a great gap instead of them). Gentoo, qt 3.3.2, kde 3.2.3.
I can confirm comment #28 that the problem only appears when "Show side image" is selected.
Same problem here (missing arrows on k-menu)!!! qt 3.3.2 (from sources) kde CVS 20040706 (from sources)
OK...i find it! I'm quite sure that the problem is QuickStartMenu! How to reproduce this bug: 1) open a terminal and write "dcop kicker kicker clearQuickStartMenu" (this clear the cached items in "Most Used Applications") 2) Launch an item that has a short name like "Help" or "Find file or "Control Center" (if you start an item with a long name it doesn't work. ex.: "File Manager - Super User Mode") 3) Launch Kmenu...the arrows are gone!!! To bring them back, go to step 1 or launch item with a long name
sorry...i miss one thing: Uthe problem appears when "Show side image" is selected. You can try to disable it and then clean again the cached items in "Most Used Applications"
Maks has committed a work-around for KDE 3.3 Beta 2 which seem to fix most cases you ever will notice. Please feel free to describe any remaining cases which you notice (with or without 0047-fix-kmenu-width.diff).
Btw, Issue N46882 at Trolltech.
i recompiled qt with the patch 0047 and now i'm testing kde 3.3beta2. it seems like the bug has disappeared ! thank you !
*** Bug 86100 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
A workaround: Create an application entry (or rename an existing one) with a text string which is longer than the the string "Recently Used Applications" This makes reappear the arrows.
*** Bug 88001 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
After trying the proposed workaround (comment #44), I can no longer see the side image. I can activate the corresponding checkbox, but the image is not drawn. More precisely it IS drawn, but underneath the menu itself (I can tell this because I'm running in a virtual machine and there the screen updates are not very fast, so I actually see the side image being drawn and then the K menu is drawn over it) But at least I can see the arrows again :)
Seems to be fixed (on KDE 3.3 and qt-3.3.3). But please don't let this happen again yes? It's a rather visible 'stupid' bug that can make people think that "Linux is not finished". For that reason I'll keep my votes on this bug so it will show up on the "The most hated bugs" list (currently at place 10) to learn from. Evil me >:) ;-)
works here for myself and others (polled on irc) using CVS ... so, we've done our bit, folks =)
