Description ndeb 2004-01-08 16:23:04 UTC
Version:           0.20 (using KDE 3.1.94 (CVS >= 20031206), Mandrake Linux Cooker i586 - Cooker)
Compiler: gcc version 3.3.2 (Mandrake Linux 10.0 3.3.2-3mdk)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.0-1mdk

I ran "kghostview /usr/share/cups/data/testprint.ps" which tries to open a sample .ps file in kghostview.

kghostview thinks the file has 2 pages. The 1st page is displayed but the mouse cursor always seems busy. The 2nd page is never displayed at all (mouse busy forever).

gv displays the same file just fine and it shows just 1 page. Clearly, kghostview is misreading the number of pages in a ps file.
Comment 1 ndeb 2004-01-08 16:48:10 UTC
I ran "xpdf /usr/share/cups/data/testprint.ps" and it failed to display the file after this error message:

Error: May not be a PDF file (continuing anyway)
Error (0): PDF file is damaged - attempting to reconstruct xref table...
Error: Couldn't find trailer dictionary
Error: Couldn't read xref table
Warning: XtRemoveGrab asked to remove a widget not on the list

Adobe acroread 5.08 also fails to display the file. So it appears that none of kghostview, xpdf, and acroread handles some "damaged" PDF files that gv handles just fine.

It works for me, on my /usr/share/cups/data/testprint.ps. Kghostview correctly display the only page on the file.

Can you post your /usr/share/cups/data/testprint.ps file please?

(
BTW, on my system:
§md5sum /usr/share/cups/data/testprint.ps
d0475170acbb3a7d35cb0023174e62d8 /usr/share/cups/data/testprint.ps
)
Comment 3 ndeb 2004-01-08 19:28:23 UTC
Sorry for my mistake in comment 1 , where I forgot that xpdf and acroread cannot read PS files (unlike gv and kghostview).

To comment 2 , on my system, "md5sum /usr/share/cups/data/testprint.ps" shows:
eb05926bb83051bb5ba94a777d17d74d /usr/share/cups/data/testprint.ps

But thats because mine is a different file altogether (comes with mandrake linux cooker release 20031231). And note that gv can display the same file just fine.

Can you post it here?
Or send it by private mail to me.

Otherwise, it's almost impossible to find out what's wrong.

thank you,
luis

Test PS file

Here's my /usr/share/cups/data/testprint.ps .
Comment 6 Luís Pedro Coelho 2004-01-11 20:53:49 UTC
This is a Mandrake version which includes a the Mandrake Logo as a file inside the file in the .ps.

So, DSC parsing in kghostview sees two pages: The real first page and the one in the logo document.

gv shows one and only one page and shows the logo in the 1st page itself. So who is right/wrong and in which way ? More specifically, what is wrong with kghostview ?

oops, I forgot to comment my previous attachement :

I've the same problem with Kghostview. I can correctly see this file with gv but I am only able to see the first page with Kghostview and the mouse cursor seems always busy.

An indication of the problem may be that in gv, the page of the ps are from 421 to 442 (an article from a journal). Maybe that Kghostview can interpret correctly this numerotation.

still valid now :/ nobody can fix this ?

Okular renders the one-page document attached just fine.
