Description David Jarvie 2003-02-05 01:02:23 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.1)
Installed from: Compiled From Sources
OS: Linux

I don't like the way that user names are displayed in the login screen in KDE 3.1. I preferred the KDE 3.0 version. Specifically, I would like to see an option as to how to display user names, so that either the UNIX user name or the user's full name, or both, can be shown. On my home system, I don't want to have to display people's surnames - the simple UNIX user name is better - but obviously in a work environment full names might be desirable. And if full names are displayed, not everyone will want to show UNIX user names. So please can we have the choice?

are you interested in the pictures in "unixlogin-only" mode? i'd prefer not to add an
option to configure the list further. instead, i'd offer to switch to a mode, where the
login line is an editable(?) combobox

I'd like to be able to display the KDE 3.0 configuration, which had pictures
along with UNIX login names. I would suggest as the simplest to implement
scheme, a simple configuration option as to whether the UNIX user name or the
UNIX account full name should be displayed. I personally don't see the need to
display both login name AND full name (although if other people see the need,
that's fine by me).

I think that the ideal approach to the KDM configuration, although it would
involve a further configuration option, would be to allow arbitrary user name
strings for the login screen to be specified. That way, it would be possible to
choose any desired names to appear on the login screen, regardless of the UNIX
account details. The default would either be the UNIX login name or the UNIX
account full name (I don't know which would be more generally desired). Plus a
checkbox to choose whether pictures should be shown.

On KDE 3.5.x you can customize kdm with themes.

in fact, you can't - both because themes are officially not supported by upstream kde3 kdm and because even if they were (as in kde4 kdm), theming does not cover these aspects of configuration.

KDM is unmaintained and not used in KDE Plasma 5.

SDDM is the login manager used in KDE Plasma 5. If you still have this same issue with SDDM, please file an issue on the SDDM bugtracker (after doing a search for existing issues first!): https://github.com/sddm/sddm/issues/
