Version: (using KDE KDE 3.0.5) Installed from: Slackware Packages OS: Linux Hi, Using any SMTP server and keeping the default port 25, Kmail reports "Unrecognised transport protocol, could not send message. Infact, when I watch the network using tcpdump, not a single packet is sent. Everything is left default except the host name, which I use email.eden.rutgers.edu. I receive fine, just cant send. I am using Kmail 1.4.3 on KDE 3.0.5a on a Slackware 8.1 box. Sending via mozilla mail works perfectly on the same box with the same configuration. I have scoured the net and have found nothing on this. Is there a configuration file in my home directory somewhere that has gone corrumpt? Is there any way to use kmail with some form of logging so i can see exactly what its doing? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Faiyaz Ahmed

Furthermore please queue a message and try to send it. If sending fails then please have a look at the message's source and send us the headers of this message. And you can have a look at the configuration file (~/.kde/share/config/kmailrc). Especially interesting are the three items in the [Composer] section which have "transport" in their name, i.e. current-transport, sticky-transport and transport-history. Also interesting are the [Transport #] sections.

I seem to have this same problem with the KMail that comes with the new SUSE 9.1 Pro 64-bit. I can check mail, I just can't send mail. To test all my settings I installed Evolution, and that works fine. KMail send is broke for me.
Mark, did you really enter your email address for your default identity? Check whether your message has a valid sender address (with View->From).
Yes, I entered a valid email address, and yes it shows up in the From. Being VERY frustrated with this, I gave up and did a complete reinstall from scratch of SUSE 9.1, but the problem was still there. But what's really strange is that after about an hour of looking around the rest of the new system to see what's there (I needed a break from this frustrating problem) I went back to KMail to fight with it some more, but lo and behold, upon opening KMail 3 of the 6 emails that stuck in my outbox all of a sudden went thru! I then deleted the other 3 test emails, and now any new email I create seems to work! So, the short of it is, it seems to have fixed itself... I'm just hoping now I never have to reinstall SUSE, 'cus I'm sure it will be broke in the fresh install again, and I have no idea how it got fixed. But anyway, thanks for responding Ingo... I'll post again if this problem rears it's ugly head again...
I have had same problem as reported by Mark. After a fresh 9.1 installation i could receive mails, but mails i tried to send stayed in the mail out. I tested Knode with suces, and installed Evoltion, still succes. Then i read the comments from Mark, deleted al mails in mailout, and now i can send mails.
I think, that deleting messages from outbox really helps. I installed newest kmail (with all KDE) for Knoppix several times and this trick is only thing I found for this problem. One delete (in konqueror in /home/[me]/mail/outbox/cur and then in kmail, but I think that simply delete in kmail works too) and all will work. Thanks for a tip.
