Qt Version: 6.11.2
Frameworks Version: 6.29.0
Operating System: Linux 7.1.8-arch1-3 x86_64
Windowing System: Wayland
Distribution: Arch Linux

Seems like it's happening to most if not all Arch Linux users. Ksecretd and Kwallet crash on startup, and prompt me for my password again after logging in. It also tries to create a new wallet for seemingly no reason.
I use Plasma Login Manager, haven't tested with SDDM. Not sure if that makes a difference.

Setting to confirmed since there are multiple users with the same crash with the same backtrace
Comment 4 Vladi 2026-08-22 23:47:37 UTC
I can confirm this bug on Arch Linux with ksecretd 6.29.0, same backtrace.
Summary:
ksecretd crashes with SIGSEGV when encrypting a secret over a DH-AES Secret Service session. The crash is deterministic and reproducible, but only in the first instance of ksecretd started by SDDM with --pam-login. After the crash, when ksecretd is automatically restarted (without --pam-login), the crash never reproduces again for the rest of the session, regardless of how many times the same secret is requested.
The practical impact is that the wallet gets locked after the crash (the restarted instance has no PAM credentials), causing all subsequent secret requests to prompt for a password — effectively breaking auto-unlock on login.

Steps to Reproduce:
Log in via SDDM (Plasma Wayland). ksecretd is started by PAM with --pam-login <fd> <fd>.
Wait for the session to fully load.
Launch Bitwarden Desktop (or possibly any application that reads a secret via the Secret Service API using a DH-AES session).
Bitwarden calls GetSecret on a Secret Service item.

Observed Result:
ksecretd crashes with SIGSEGV inside EVP_CIPHER_CTX_set_key_length (libcrypto). The crash occurs during KWalletFreedesktopSessionAlgorithmDhAes::encrypt → QCA::Cipher::setup → QCA OpenSSL plugin → OpenSSL.
After the crash, D-Bus activates a new ksecretd instance without --pam-login. This new instance reports:
ksecretd: Lacking a socket, pipe: 0 env: 0
The wallet is now locked, and all applications prompt for the wallet password.

I did some debugging and found that the OpenSSL default provider was not available when the failure occurred.

EVP_DecryptInit_ex() returned 0 with an empty OpenSSL error queue. I then tried initializing the same cipher using a fresh EVP_CIPHER_CTX, but that failed as well. An explicit:

EVP_CIPHER_fetch(nullptr, "AES-128-CBC", nullptr)

also returned nullptr, again without adding anything to the error queue. This indicates that the crash in EVP_CIPHER_CTX_set_key_length() was secondary: QCA continued using the context after the preceding initialization had failed.

The documentation for the default provider [1] says:

“If an attempt to load a provider has already been made (whether successful or not) then the default provider won't be loaded automatically. Therefore if the default provider is to be used in conjunction with other providers then it must be loaded explicitly.”

QCA explicitly loads the legacy provider, but it does not explicitly load the default provider. Although QCA passes retain_fallbacks=1 to OSSL_PROVIDER_try_load(), and this should normally preserve fallback-provider activation, the default provider was unavailable in the affected PAM-started ksecretd process.

I modified QCA to explicitly load the default provider before loading the legacy provider:

OSSL_PROVIDER_try_load(nullptr, "default", 1);

With this change, I can no longer reproduce the crash. I tested it across multiple complete reboots, and ksecretd remained stable. This suggests that the problem is related to QCA relying on implicit activation of the default provider. The attached patch makes that dependency explicit.

Explicitly load the default openssl provider
Comment 11 Gregor Geßner 2026-08-23 17:32:46 UTC
Yes, that aligns with my investigation. The change from https://invent.kde.org/libraries/qca/-/merge_requests/131 is not yet in a released version.

I just did a build of qca from source which builds the unreleased version 2.3.11. When I use that version of the library I can no longer reproduce the crash. After switching back to 2.3.10 the crash can be reproduced reliably.

I can reproduce this on Arch Linux as well, but my reproduction pattern is somewhat different from the original report.

Environment:

Arch Linux
KDE Plasma / Wayland
kwallet 6.29.0-1
qca-qt6 2.3.10-8
OpenSSL 3.6.3-1
Chromium 151.0.7922.173-1

I have observed the ksecretd crash twice so far. Both crashes have the same stack trace:

EVP_CIPHER_CTX_set_key_length()
  -> libqca-ossl.so
  -> QCA::Cipher::setup()
  -> QCA::Cipher::Cipher()
  -> ksecretd

The more detailed backtrace also matches the one in this bug:
KWalletFreedesktopSessionAlgorithmDhAes::encrypt()
-> KWalletFreedesktopSession::encrypt()
-> KWalletFreedesktopService::ensecret()
-> KWalletFreedesktopItem::getSecret()
-> KWalletFreedesktopService::GetSecrets().

Both core dumps were generated by:

/usr/bin/ksecretd --pam-login 8 9

I also noticed that the issue is intermittent on my system.

In some cases, starting Chromium is followed immediately by a KWallet password prompt, and ksecretd may crash around that time. However, not every Chromium start triggers the crash.

There is also an important difference from the original report: one of my crashes happened before Chromium was started. My journal showed:

19:45:17 systemd: Started Unlock kwallet from pam credentials.
19:45:19 ksecretd: ...
19:46:18 ksecretd dumped core
19:47:39 systemd: Started Chromium

So Chromium is not necessarily required for the crash itself.

This makes me suspect that Chromium is sometimes just the first client that performs the relevant Secret Service operation after the PAM-launched ksecretd is running. When the crash happens, the subsequent KWallet password prompt is expected because the original ksecretd --pam-login process has terminated.

The two crashes I captured were:

2026-08-23 15:37:37 +05
PID 1085
ksecretd --pam-login 8 9

2026-08-25 00:40:47 +05
PID 1056
ksecretd --pam-login 8 9

Both crash in exactly the same place in libcrypto.so.3 / libqca-ossl.so.

This seems consistent with the investigation in this report concerning the OpenSSL default provider and QCA 2.3.10.

I am attaching/providing my full coredumpctl info ksecretd output and journal excerpt in case they are useful for correlating the crash with the Secret Service request.

One question that may be useful for debugging: could the relevant Secret Service/D-Bus request made immediately before the crash be logged or otherwise traced, so that we can identify which client/request (e.g. Chromium) triggers KWalletFreedesktopService::GetSecrets()?

You could run dbus-monitor before the crash (e.g. on startup) and add timestamps so you could compare to the crash time. But I don't think it matters what the client is - once the call is made, the result will be the same. And we can already see from the traces that the crashing call is to either `KWalletFreedesktopService::GetSecrets()` or `KWalletFreedesktopItem::GetSecret()` (they both go through the same code path). Those correspond directly to `Service.GetSecrets` and `Item.GetSecret` API calls.

The duplicate reports also had `KWalletFreedesktopCollection::CreateItem()` crashing in the same place (a `Collection.CreateItem` API call). The reports mention a few different clients: Bitwarden Desktop, secret-tool, Chromium (your report).

Per comment 11, this is already fixed with the latest QCA, so I think we just need to tag a new version of it until the migration to Botan is finished in https://invent.kde.org/frameworks/kwallet/-/merge_requests/148 .

What I'm less clear about is why these reports started only recently, with 6.29. It might just be a coincidental external change, but this part of comment 4 suggests it may be something that was recently changed in the PAM instance initialization:

Yes, I also found it unsatisfying not to be able to figure out what exactly causes the issue to occur after the recent KDE release.
I have fairly limited experience developing/debugging kde. I wasn't able to debug the autostarted daemon early enough to get a clear insight into the initialization process (there are definitely ways to do this, I just didn't figure out how)

If somebody wants to investigate further: the cleanest repro steps I have on a clean os install:
 * Install latest cachyos/arch in a VM (I used cachyos because I had that image available, but from the reports arch should work just as well). Of course use KDE/Wayland and not some other DM.
 * setup user using password login and disable autologin making sure kwallet-pam is active
 * install all updates and setup debug environment (sources, gdb config etc.)
 * reboot
 * after login open kdewalletmanager (wallet should be completely empty)
 * create new folder, create new password in the folder -> crash with trace:

 (it is a slightly different path, than the other reports but the end result from an incorrect initialization of the context seems to be the same.)
 * to reset the test: restore snapshot or remove the wallet and reboot. After removing the wallet and rebooting the issue can be reproduced.

You can try the same with `git bisect` or just installing older versions, to confirm if this was caused by a change in `ksecretd`. E.g. does the crash still occur with 6.28 ?

Just to add a little bit more info:

The crash happened when I booted Arch Linux on my Lenovo P16s, while it was attached over thunderbolt to my two DELL 27" monitors. KWallet, however, did not crash when I booted the system no thunderbolt cable attached. After the system booted, I re-attached the thunderbolt cable, with no crashes happening.

To add to my previous aforementioned comment:

This morning, I booted my computer from home, connected to my Anker docking station. I have a 4K DELL 27" screen, an various other usb devices connected to it.

KWallet did *not* crash.

This is in contrast to when my computer was connected to my DELL monitors at work, where KWallet crashed every time after logging in to my Plasma session, as previously stated.

The last time I updated my arch linux system, before noticing the KWallet crash, was on 2026-08-25. I grep'ed my `pacman.log` for that day:

The KWallet crash problem could have existed earlier, however, without me noticing, since I was only in my office, where the crash happens, one week before. At home, or when the laptop (Lenovo P16s) boots without any external devices connected, KWallet does not crash.

It's technically a different crash from bug 482819, but the MR for 482819 covers both cases.
