DESCRIPTION "Speed" is vague enough that can lead users to think that the option will reveal your internet speed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aaPj-uuulig&t=695s STEPS TO REPRODUCE Go to System Settings > Network. OBSERVED RESULT There's a "Speed" option, but instead of showing the speed as the name implies, it shows a list of speed limits, or so that's what the tooltip says. EXPECTED RESULT Replace the vague "Speed" with something more specific to avoid confusion. Thanks for the feedback. It would help us a lot if you were more detailed in your descriptions. To see the Speed you're talking about, I had to watch the video. It's necessary to go to System Settings -> Wi-Fi & Networking Select a wired connection (wireless connections don't have this field) Click the Wired tab In the video, Linus (of LTT), reviewing the Steam Machine, asks - why is "Speed" at 100 Mb? He questioned why the Speed drop down would let him select anything he wants, when the "connection" isn't a 100Gb connection (meaning Internet connection). He wanted the field to tell him what the Internet connection speed is. There is a disconnect between what the field is intended for (the link speed of the Ethernet port) vs. what he thought it was for (his Internet connection speed) The tooltip does say "Request that the device use only the specified speed" - but this doesn't define what "device" is or which speed, so the confusion is valid for someone who isn't familiar with networking cards and hardware. There are a couple of potential approaches, between renaming the field (which might be problematic for translations) and updating the tooltip to make it clear what "device" and "speed" are being referred to
I can make a merge request if someone link me to the text file.
It'll be somewhere in plasma-nm; you can grep through the repo for the English string to find it.
Is this it? https://invent.kde.org/plasma/plasma-nm/-/blob/master/applet/ConnectionItem.qml#L136
No, that's the label of a tab button.
And this? https://invent.kde.org/plasma/plasma-nm/-/blob/master/libs/editor/settings/ui/wiredconnectionwidget.ui#L208
It's the one on line 125 in that file.
Git commit 1ff91a056317553185a07dda84a2311fe1f687ac by Nate Graham, on behalf of Fernando Marcelino Muniz. Committed on 15/09/2026 at 23:46. Pushed by ngraham into branch 'master'. KCM: Change "Speed:" to "Speed limit:" The new term will not allow users to think it is a speedometer, due to the fact it just displays "Speed: some number".
