DESCRIPTION After a system update and reboot, the keyboard layout is suddenly WRONG. STEPS TO REPRODUCE 1. Install Cachy or similar rolling/release distro with a single non-default keyboard layout, like German 2. Go about your day, then update the KDE DE package suite 3. Reboot and you might be locked out of your system depending on if your password contains special characters or not. OBSERVED RESULT keyboard layout manager failure EXPECTED RESULT don\t change it. SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS Operating System: CachyOS Linux KDE Plasma Version: 6.7.1 KDE Frameworks Version: 6.27.0 Qt Version: 6.11.1 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Imagine using LUKS and needing to enter characters like å That would be terrible. Do you have fcitx5 or another input method (like ibus) installed?

Also, see link. multiple users are affected I don't know what cachy installs by default. In the past, users of Arch-based distributions have often ended up with fcitx5 installed unintentionally, and some distributions may install it by default to support languages that need an input method.

Seems to be related to a xkeyboard-config update in CachyOS: https://old.reddit.com/r/cachyos/comments/1ug4t3t/fix_keyboard_layout_reset_after_the/ (Here's also one of the CachyOS founders: https://old.reddit.com/r/cachyos/comments/1ufv0ko/my_keyboard_changed_to_englsh_is_there_a_way_to/otvqu2g/) I'll leave this open for a bit in case someone with more familiarity about the details here to chime in. Maybe there's something we can change on our end, but it looks like a distribution issue, not a Plasma issue.
CCing the very helpful XKB fellow, who may know more!
I doubt very much it has anything to do with xkeyboard-config: this package does not touch you keyboard configuration, only the keyboard layout database (XKB files). While an error there would usually lead to fallback to a US Qwerty layout, this error would persist even if you set manually you layout (KDE, localectl, etc.). Since the current issue was fixed by setting the keyboard layout config manually, that’s not it. I use xkeyboard-config 2.48 on opensuse Tumbleweed + Plasma 6.7.1 (Wayland) with `de` layout and have no issue… except dead keys do not seem to work on the login page, but I do not use them there. If the pattern of affected setups is ArchLinux-based distro + KDE, the issue must be distro-specific. Maybe an unfortunate combination of of packages with specific versions is involved.

I suspect what's going on here is that affected people have no systemwide keyboard layout set (so the system falls back to en_US), and plasma-login-manager was respecting the value set in /var/lib/plasmalogin/.config/plasma-localerc in the past, but stopped doing so in Plasma 6.7.1, instead defaulting to the systemwide value which is empty for some people. That could be caused by https://invent.kde.org/plasma/plasma-login-manager/-/commit/908dbcd9136c3c4f20d014fb4cbbcc0dadbc3360, or something similar. Marking as critical because this could lock people out of their systems if their passwords contain characters not present on an en_US keyboard.
For everyone affected, please run the following commands and paste the output for any file that exists: cat /etc/default/keyboard cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/*keyboard.conf cat /var/lib/plasmalogin/.config/plasma-localerc Then, mention whether you have solved the problem yet by running `sudo localectl set-x11-keymap <code>` yet. If you have not run it, so do and then run the `cat [blabla]` commands again and paste the output for any file that exists. Thanks!

why is this categorized as a login manager issue? - it's a system-wide issue. In my case, after logging in, I enabled "Layouts" in KDE Settings and added the correct layout to the empty list. These commands were run after fixing the problem (as the instructions didn't get added until a few days later) cat /etc/default/keyboard # KEYBOARD CONFIGURATION FILE # Consult the keyboard(5) manual page. XKBMODEL="pc105" XKBLAYOUT="se" XKBVARIANT="" BACKSPACE="guess" cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/*keyboard.conf # Written by systemd-localed(8), read by systemd-localed and Xorg. It's # probably wise not to edit this file manually. Use localectl(1) to # update this file. Section "InputClass" Identifier "system-keyboard" MatchIsKeyboard "on" Option "XkbLayout" "se" EndSection cat /var/lib/plasmalogin/.config/plasma-localerc [Formats] LANG=en_SE.UTF-8
After setting my correct layout in system settings, it works fine for the desktop and lock screen, but the login manager stays english. cat /etc/default/keyboard cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/*keyboard.conf # KEYBOARD CONFIGURATION FILE # Consult the keyboard(5) manual page. XKBMODEL="pc105" XKBLAYOUT="hu" XKBVARIANT="" BACKSPACE="guess" # Read and parsed by systemd-localed. It's probably wise not to edit this file # manually too freely. (In reply to hexile461 from comment #13) > why is this categorized as a login manager issue? - it's a system-wide issue. Because this is the KDE bug tracker, which tracks bugs in KDE software. It can't be used to track system-wide issues, since responsibility for your whole system falls on your OS vendor, not KDE. Which means if anything is trackable on the KDE side, it must be a KDE bug. In this case, it appears that a change in plasma-login-manager may have changed how this pre-existing system-wide issue manifested. The issue was still there, but a PLM change may have exposed it and thereby made it more prominent.

Same issue on NixOS since updating from KDE Plasma 6.6.5 to 6.7.3 with both sddm and plasma-login-manager. Operating System: NixOS 26.11 KDE Plasma Version: 6.7.3 KDE Frameworks Version: 6.28.0 Qt Version: 6.11.1 Kernel Version: 7.1.3 (64-bit) Graphics Platform: Wayland [user@nixos:~]$ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/*keyboard.conf Section "InputClass" Identifier "Keyboard catchall" MatchIsKeyboard "on" Option "XkbModel" "pc104" Option "XkbLayout" "de" Option "XkbOptions" "terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp" Option "XkbVariant" "" EndSection [user@nixos:~]$ sudo cat /var/lib/plasmalogin/.config/plasma-localerc [Formats] LANG=en_US.UTF-8 The command 'sudo localectl set-x11-keymap de' did not fix it.
Created attachment 194423 [details] attachment-777533-0.html if the command does not fix it, you can solve the problem by going into KDE Settings -> Keyboiard and then First enable layouts, then add the missing language. Apply changes and close the Settings window. Also ran into this issue on Arch Linux with Plasma 6.7.3. The worst part is that there isn't even a possiblity to switch the layout, neither for the hw keyboard nor the virtual one. I set my keyboard layout via a file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d. This was respected by every login manager so far and also by the desktop session (yes, even the Wayland one). Content of said file: Section "InputClass" Identifier "Keyboards" MatchIsKeyboard "True" Driver "libinput" Option "XkbLayout" "de" Option "XkbVariant" "neo" EndSection cat /var/lib/plasmalogin/.config/plasma-localerc [Formats] LANG=en_US.UTF-8 /etc/default/keyboard does not exist on my system localectl set-x11-keymap creates pretty much the same file (apart from different identifier and dropping the libinput line that isn't really necessary), so that doesn't help.

Can anyone confirm that LANG set in /var/lib/plasmalogin/.config/plasma-localerc is taking effect again in Plasma 6.7.4, which was just released?
(I ask because I suspect affected people may have been suffering from Bug 517081, which is fixed in Plasma 6.7.4)
After doing more investigation I believe I have enough information to piece together what happened: people who were affected by this bug had both of the following two things going on: - /etc/locale.conf was missing, or else LANG was set to "C" or "C.UTF-8" in it. - /var/lib/plasmalogin/.config/plasma-localerc had LANG set to the correct value. In this state, settings previously synced to plasma-login-manager were masking the issue that the systemwide LANG value was set inappropriately — which would have been caused by the OS's installer failing to set it properly in the past. However, https://invent.kde.org/plasma/plasma-login-manager/-/commit/7b4a086c71779ebf4df80a2f681928cfeba3bf87 prevented files previously synced to /var/lib/plasmalogin/ from taking effect starting in Plasma 6.7.0, which exposed the underlying issue with /etc/locale.conf. The regression in plasma-login-manager was fixed in https://invent.kde.org/plasma/plasma-login-manager/-/commit/ab16cf42b2f49303f7c177ec4ff2f1ce3f405884, which was just released in Plasma 6.7.4. So, to resolve the issue: 1. Set LANG properly in /etc/locale.conf 2. Upgrade to Plasma 6.7.4 and then either manually remove LANG from /var/lib/plasmalogin/.config/plasma-localerc, or else manually set it to the same value as what's in /etc/locale.conf.
I'm skeptical about that conclusion. On my system: /etc/locale.conf LANG=en_US.UTF-8 /var/lib/plasmalogin/.config/plasma-localerc [Formats] LANG=en_US.UTF-8 So both are set and they are the same. I have not changed /etc/locale.conf in years. Still, my keyboard settings are not respected, it should load layout de in variant neo, but it does not. I think it might be somewhat of an improvement, because now it seems to load the de layout, but skips the variant, but either way it still doesn't load the keyboard settings correctly. (kwin does that properly afterwards)
I think my conclusion was correct for the locale, but not the keyboard layout, which is a separate thing. I'll keep investigating.
