DESCRIPTION Today, June 17, 2026, I installed an update via Discover and restarted my computer to apply the update, as usual. However, after the restart, the system simply dontt get past the boot screen and get stucked on Dell and the Fedora logo in an "infinite loading screen" After restarting more than 10 times and almost giving up I had the idea to disconnect the USB monitor and I was able to reach the system login screen. After that login, the system showed a "Plasma 6.7 welcome window" but everything is completely broken. If i plug the usb the system get in a loop and crash completely until I remove the usb monitor. Q: Can I safely "undo" this update ? For real, This is my prod machine and everything is broken now :( STEPS TO REPRODUCE 1. From Fedora 44 and Plasma 6.6 2. Sounds pretty bad. :( It's this reason why I'm quite fond of OSs with transactional/atomic update processes these days, where a bad upgrade can simply be rolled back. You can get a lot of the same thing with Btrfs snapshots of your system volume, though to my knowledge Fedora doesn't set these up by default. Would be good to look into doing that once you've managed to recover from this situation. It's possible the DisplayLink USB monitor is be part of the problem; support for these is provided by out-of-tree kernel modules and they're known to be pretty unstable TBH. Is kwin_wayland the process that crashes when you plug it in? We can focus on that here; the rest of the "omg my system is broken!" type issues could be indicative of a failed update or something. Chrome not using the right keyboard layout in particular seems very weird. CCing Neal in case he knows of any other similar reports on Fedora.

Thank you for looking at my report. I'm a Linux user with 5+ years having used Ubuntu/Mint/Debian/Void. However, I've been using F44/KDE for less than a month and unfortunately I don't have any kind of btrfs/timeshift snapshots. Since the install of the F44 all updates have been applied without issues and everything was working perfectly (I do see my mistake as I should have taken a snapshot) - The problem regarding the characters "é/ã/ç/õ" was solved by setting the "virtual keyboard" to "none" - I can now control the brightness on my laptop's screen - I tried both "dnf history undo/rollback" but both return an error about the protected "plasma-desktop" (which make senses) My problem is similar to the one in the video below. In his case, his monitor can be connected but it doesn't work (please don't take his offensive words for my own, as I don't mean to be disrespectful): - Video: https://www.reddit.com/r/kde/comments/1u8enbu/need_help/ Mine, however, cannot be connected because if I do, the image appears but instantly everything breaks and the system simply stops working in a horrible chain loop of errors and crashes. The lower panel goes away, all apps close and the backgroud turns black (probably plasma stop at all) Regarding the "USB monitor and driver" I don't see the hardware as a problem bcs it was working perfectly before the update to 6.7 and It works fine in a Ubuntu usb live media. - My specific "usb monitor driver" can be found here "https://github.com/displaylink-rpm/displaylink-rpm/releases/tag/v6.2.0-1" searching by "fedora-44-displaylink-1.14.16-1.github_evdi.x86_64.rpm" (again, in Plasma 6.5 and 6.6 works fine) To be honest, what really frustrates me is that I don't know how to troubleshoot this problem and I don't want to mess more because this is my prod machine so I really really need proceed with caution.

Created attachment 193291 [details] boot_froozed_startup This image shows the USB monitor working, but the boot process doesn't work and gets stuck on "loading". For the boot to work, I need to turn it off using the power button, remove the USB cable, and turn it back on.
Created attachment 193292 [details] usb_monitor_working_ubuntu This image shows the USB monitor working perfectly with the same driver on Ubuntu. Image taken on the night of June 17th after the update, meaning that, at least in my view, it's not a hardware problem.

This includes numerous docking stations, USB monitors, and USB adapters. --- Also, I've managed to "rm ~/.config/kwinoutputconfig.json". The result of that is that I can plug the monitor the system doesn't crash but nothing is displayed either. If I keep the monitor plugged and restart the laptop then this happens: https://bugsfiles.kde.org/attachment.cgi?id=193291
Created attachment 193299 [details] journalctl_logs A few more logs that appear when I connect the usb monitor. Obtained with "journalctl -b -o short-full | grep -i -E "card0|drm|kwin_wayland|sddm" | tail -1000" Is there any other command that can be helpful ?
If the only remaining issue is the DisplayLink monitor causing problems, that's thankfully already been fixed; see Bug 520361. Can you upgrade to Plasma 6.7.1 and verify the issue is fixed for you?

Hey Nate, I've managed to change my second monitor to a HDMI one and I've also did a fresh install because at the time of the reporting my system was broken and behaving strangely (this time I'm using btrfs). Right now I'm on "Plasma Version: 6.7.0 / KDE Frameworks Version: 6.27.0 / Qt Version: 6.11.1" and everything is working as expected.. Yesterday I received the notification regarding 6.7.1 but i'll wait a few weeks to apply it. I choose to not use anymore a usb monitor so I'll mark this one as resolved and fixed. I'd like to thank you for your time and interest in my problem. Really apreciated.
You're welcome! I'm happy it was helpful. Once you've got 6.7.1, it should be safe to try the USB DisplayLink monitor again.
