Description dofficialgman 2026-06-16 23:33:08 UTC
DESCRIPTION
The new "background apps" in system tray "feature" introduced in plasma 6.7 causes duplicate entries in (at least some) applications such as deskflow (install via flathub).

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. run plasma 6.7
2. install deskflow via flathub
3. start deskflow and minimize to tray

OBSERVED RESULT
Observe two deskflow icons in system tray. One that matches the theme colors (what was present in 6.7 and earlier plasma versions) and the new colored icon (new in plasma 6.7)

EXPECTED RESULT
only one deskflow icon is present (don't really care which one)

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System: KDE Neon
KDE Plasma Version: 6.7.0
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.27.0
Qt Version: 6.11.1

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Comment 1 dofficialgman 2026-06-16 23:33:41 UTC
Also, please add 6.7.0 as a supported version to the "version first reported in" section so I can accurately record this issue.
Comment 2 Akseli Lahtinen 2026-06-18 08:38:30 UTC
I can't repro with Deskflow, I only see one tray item. Might be fixed in 6.7.1?

Comment 4 TraceyC 2026-06-18 16:58:54 UTC
In the duplicate, the user observed this with non-Electron apps installed from flatpak - Telegram and Remmina

I was not able to reproduce this with flatpak apps on Plasma built from git-master, so this likely is fixed in 6.7.1
Please let us know if this still happens in that version. If so, please change this to CONFIRMED. Thanks!
Comment 5 Nate Graham 2026-06-18 20:58:55 UTC
Like Akseli and Tracey, I can't reproduce the issue as written, at least not with current git master. Nor for the apps in the duplicate report.

deskflow preferences as I have them set (I believe the default)

please see the attached picture for the deskflow preferences as I have them set (I believe these are the defaults).

I'll also note, you need to have deskflow CLOSED (ie: running in notification area) in order for the colorful second tray icon to appear.
Comment 7 dofficialgman 2026-06-19 22:33:19 UTC
I will also note that setting it to the "colorful" icon in the preferences (see screenshot again) will make it only show the "colorful" icon. so really it is the default monochrome icon that is now broken in plasma 6.7 (6.7.1 has not released yet, I'll test again when it releases on ~Tuesday)

Comment 10 John Veness 2026-06-21 12:48:14 UTC
I think this is the same problem I'm seeing in 6.7 (I haven't got 6.7.1 yet), although in my case I wouldn't call it "duplicate entries". In my case, I am seeing new system tray icons for apps that never had them before and have no need for such an icon, such as Firefox, VSCodium, Ungoogled Chromium, and KDE's own ISO Image Writer. These are all apps that I have installed as (user) Flatpaks. The icons don't seem to appear for non-Flatpak apps.

I think it is relevant that this seems to (mostly) only happen in X11. In Wayland, the icons don't appear for most of the time, although they do appear briefly when logging in while a session is being restored (once the session is restored, the icons disappear).

Surely related, in X11, in System Tray Settings, there are entries for each of these apps. These entries don't appear in Wayland.

I only run wayland systems, so that is what I am reporting the bug on.

I should note, in order to reproduce, you need to actually connect a client to the deskflow server before minimizing/closing to the tray. If you close the application to the tray with no client connected, you only get the colorless icon. So you are all probably testing incorrectly without a client connected which is why you haven't been able to reproduce.

Same issue appears when using easyeffects (flatpak)
Comment 16 Luka Rasputin 2026-07-06 06:29:36 UTC
Duplicate of bug 522230?
Comment 17 Joëlle van Essen 2026-07-08 10:43:11 UTC
I have the same issue with the following Flatpaks from Flathub:

Easy Effects (com.github.wwmm.easyeffects)
qBittorrent (org.qbittorrent.qBittorrent)
Steam (com.valvesoftware.Steam)

OS: CachyOS
KDE Plasma Version: 6.7.2
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.27.0
Qt Version: 6.11.1
Comment 18 TraceyC 2026-07-08 20:32:22 UTC
Setting to confirmed, since multiple people have seen the same thing

I still can't reproduce here.
Comment 19 Joëlle van Essen 2026-07-08 21:52:26 UTC
I'll try and see if I can get some more diagnostic info sometime soon
Comment 20 David Redondo 2026-07-09 16:55:36 UTC
If you/your distro are using apparmor it's likely caused by apparmor, see https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=522230. Plasmashell is denied to check if the pid of sni is from inside a flatpak. We need to do this to not show a icon if an app has a SNI.

If not, we need to debug a bit more. An important hint is if plasmoidviewer -a org.kde.plasma.systemtray shows duplicate icons.
Comment 21 Nate Graham 2026-07-09 17:09:26 UTC
I think we're going to need people to open individual bug reports when they see this, because in principle it could happen for multiple reasons. And people will need to mention which distro they're using, since some come with AppArmor.

I just noticed one source of the issue when compiling apps using flatpak-builder! See Bug 522862.

dofficialgman, can you reproduce your issue if you remove or disable AppArmor on your system? IIRC Neon ships with it turned on.
Comment 22 John Veness 2026-07-09 19:14:51 UTC
I've created BUG 522864 for my experience with this issue.
Comment 23 Joëlle van Essen 2026-07-12 15:06:41 UTC
Can confirm that disabling the plasmashell profile in AppArmor (which I am using) fixes the issue on my end.
Comment 24 dofficialgman 2026-07-12 20:24:03 UTC
Here is what I tried:

moved the "plasmashell" file in /etc/apparmor.d to the /tmp folder
restarted the apparmor service with sudo systemctl restart apparmor.service
tried launching one of the apps with the known issue (eg: deskflow)

the issue still occurs
Comment 25 dofficialgman 2026-07-12 20:25:25 UTC
the issue also still occurs with the apparmor service stopped entirely (eg: sudo systemctl stop apparmor.service)

unsure what this was supposed to prove. after installing plasmoidviewer as part of the plasma-sdk package (which was provided by the kde neon apt repos). running the command you suggest opens a "plasmoidviewer" window (see attached below). Closing the window with the X in the top right causes the application to core dump.

if the systemtray in the panel shows duplicate icons whether it also shows duplciate icons in plasmoidviewer, as such your test outside this situation indeed doesnt prove much.

I have the same issue with the following Flatpaks from Flathub:

Telegram Desktop
Proton Pass

OS: KDE Neon
Session: Wayland
KDE Plasma Version: 6.7.2
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.28.0
Qt Version: 6.11.1
Comment 30 David Redondo 2026-07-13 12:30:15 UTC
I just want to note while we are looking into this, you should be able to hide one of the duplicates manually.
Comment 31 TraceyC 2026-07-14 21:19:19 UTC
Marking confirmed, since this has been reported by multiple users.
Comment 32 tukykarmakar 2026-07-23 14:04:06 UTC
I'm experiencing this issue with Discord and Heroic Games Launcher. Both applications run in background when their main window is closed.

For me, each have the original monochrome icon that follows my theme for tray icons, and a duplicate coloured icon that's shown in the application launcher menu. The coloured icons only show the option to quit the app when I right-click on them, whereas the other ones show all the relevant options like showing acknowledgements for Discord and launching a game for Heroic. The option to quit the application through the duplicate icons do work.

I noticed that when I open the application's main window using the duplicate icons, they disappear but reappear after few seconds when the window is closed. When main window is opened with the original icon, the duplicates stay. I also noticed that Flatpaks of Firefox and Floorp (based on Firefox) also show icons when launched, but they disappear after a second because of the pattern with open main window mentioned earlier, and they don't run in background when the window is closed.

See a new example in Bug 524006.
Comment 36 John Veness 2026-09-20 20:07:31 UTC
Another example with Signal Desktop flatpak, where I think the new Plasma-created icon is actually *replacing* the app-created icon, and has significantly less functionality: see Bug 525998.
