baloo never finilzes a file and uses one core 100%

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Install Fedora 43
2. Logon as user
3.

There is a bug somewhere,

We should either have a timeout, a CPU usage limit as contingency probably.

Try extracting the plain text manually...
   $ pdftotext OP-1\ Manual.pdf
and see if that works. Baloo, or the extractor, does essentially this. Doing it manually does it without limits on RAM that you get with Baloo, so it could be faster.

I've seen PDF's that take days to extract (if I remember Bug 380456, where there's a discussion about a scientific plot...)

Did you get any results on this?

I've tried it on Fedora 43 and Neon Unstable and left it running, it was still chewing CPU after 30 minutes. I think we have a particularly difficult PDF to convert to text. This bug should be moved to, I assume, Popper...

It may be that you've got more than one problematic file, stick with the "balooctl6 monitor".

Note you can use systemctl to force a stop and restart of Baloo, it is more forcefull, killing the baloo_file and baloo_file_extractor processes rather than asking them to tidy up and go away.

$ systemctl --user restart kde-baloo

You can check that it has restarted properly with

$ systemctl --user status kde-baloo

All pages (1-46) with the notable exception of page 33 take a few miliseconds at most with `pdftotext -f <n> -l <n>`. Page 46 takes very long.

The same can be seen when browsing the file with e.g. okular, all other pages render fast, but page 33 takes ages to render (still waiting ...).

mupdf says:
exception stack overflow!
limit error: exception stack overflow!
warning: cannot load object (693 0 R) into cache

gs also hangs on page 33:
gs -dNOPAUSE -dBATCH -sDEVICE=png16m -sOutputFile=/tmp/OP-1_gs_%d.png /tmp/OP-1\ Manual.pdf

This is an upstream issues most likely in libpoppler with a page bugging it into an infinite loop as demonstrated in the stack trace and `pdftotext OP-1\ Manual.pdf`.

Could you report it upstream for poppler ?

Both `balooctl monitor` and KDE system settings show the file which is currently indexed.

Its not an infinite loop, but a very deep nesting of Form XObjects. Unfortunately poppler reparses every XObject and referenced associated dictionary (entry) when it encounters it.

The same underlying reason? A PDF that takes ages to extract the plain text? Check with pdftotext...

If it is a different file, could you attatch ithere and we'll check.

As far as i know there hasn't been a Merge Request to kill long running extractions.
