STEPS TO REPRODUCE 1. Open Kate, Ctrl+N to get a new blank document. 2. Enter exactly the following text: ``` This is some introductory text: > this is a quote This is not a quote ``` 3. Move the mouse pointer to the left of the >, then click and drag to the right, as if to select the quoted text. OBSERVED RESULT The > character disappears! Undoing with Ctrl+Z does not bring back the deleted character; in fact it makes the situation worse by removing the word "this". Marking severity as critical as this causes data loss. EXPECTED RESULT The text is selected without being modified. SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS Git master version of Kate from KDE's nightly Flatpak repo. OS and hardware version info, if it's relevant: Operating System: KDE Linux 2026-03-22 KDE Plasma Version: 6.6.80 KDE Frameworks Version: 6.25.0 Qt Version: 6.10.2 Kernel Version: 6.19.8-zen1-1-zen (64-bit) Graphics Platform: Wayland Processors: 16 × AMD Ryzen 7 7840U w/ Radeon™ 780M Graphics Memory: 17 GB of RAM (16.0 GB usable) Graphics Processor: AMD Radeon 780M Graphics
Created attachment 190940 [details] Screen recording of it happening
I can reproduce on Kate 25.12.3, installed from repo Plasma built from git-master
The same bug has been reported on Fedora : https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2449945 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2441633
Can not reproduce. Tried: Kate: 26.07.70 KDE Frameworks: 6.23.0 Qt: Using 6.10.2 and built against 6.10.2 Also could not reproduce with KTextEditor-master
Can't trigger that either: Kate: 25.12.3 KDE Frameworks: 6.24.0 Qt: Using 6.10.2 and built against 6.10.2 NixOS 26.05 (Yarara) (Wayland) Build ABI: x86_64-little_endian-lp64 Kernel: linux 6.18.19
I just reproduced the issue in a Plasma sticky note, which uses completely different text components. On a hunch, I disabled Plasma Keyboard (System Settings > Keyboard > Virtual Keyboard) and the issue instantly went away. Re-enabling it makes the issue come back. Moving the plasma-keyboard. Basically, mouse-selecting a line of text from the left side will remove > or - or any number it begins with.
