gwenview (23.08.5) using Qt 5.15.13

My KDE distribution ISO was downloaded from either the KDE or Ubuntu website.

I just booted up my laptop this morning and did some updates. One was for patching a bounds check (can't remember the library) and one was for fixing a typo in a config file (snapd). After the updates and a reboot, I went to start scanning stuff.

I tried to open the first PNG file and Gwenview just halted for a while then closed. Didn't get a crash message, but it sure looked like a crash to me. I tried a few other files, still the same. All of these files are between 18-30 MB each.

Finally I rebooted again, tried to open some small jpg files, and there I finally got a crash message.

Just yesterday I was opening and viewing large PNG files fine. Please let me know what else you might need to track this one.

I can't open any images (regardless of the file type). Gwenview opens and then crashes. This behavior started after today's system update.

May be related to a kioslave5 error that has also appeared when generating thumnails in Dolphin.

Comment 6 deanobats 2026-03-18 11:19:59 UTC
The bony finger of suspicion might be pointing at libexiv as nothing on my system will now open a jpeg apart from web browsers; this includes geeqie, shotwell, GIMP or ocular. Dolphin hangs when inspecting properties of a jpeg (with exif data?) too, so perhaps this is the root cause of the issue as that was one of the recent upgrades that broke things.

New crash information added by DrKonqi

gwenview (23.08.5) using Qt 5.15.13

Just started happening here today, 18 Mar 2026. Also, trying to view JPGs in Dolphin results in a crash dialog for kioslave5, loads of crash faces in the task bar and giant Q's being displayed. Thunar has no such issues, but trying to view these JPGs in GWenView causes GWenView to crash.

To show available versions in repository:
    apt-cache policy libexiv2-27

To install particular version:
    sudo apt-get install libexiv2-27=0.27.6-1build1
or
    sudo apt-get --allow-downgrades install libexiv2-27=0.27.6-1build1

To "hold" a package (preventing further upgrades):
    sudo apt-mark hold libexiv2-27

To show current "holds":
    apt-mark showhold

To "unhold" a package:
    sudo apt-mark unhold libexiv2-27

Note that this report is likely against a 24.04 version. I'm running 25.10, and there is no .27 version to downgrade to. I'm having the same issue though.

None of the apt operations to change libexiv versions seem to be usable when running 25.10 to allow for bypassing the bug and using the tools.

Then try to downgrade to the previous libexiv2-28 release.

I see two packages here: 0.28.5+dfsg-1ubuntu0.1 (which is installed) and 0.28.5+dfsg-1 . Note that the installed one is a security update. Downgrade to the other one at your own risk. I guess Ubuntu will soon provide an updated security update which fixes the crashes.

Thank you, that seems to have resolved it.

gwenview (23.08.5) using Qt 5.15.13

Crash began to happen after Kubuntu update on 18 Mar 2026. The update appears to have changed exiv library processing of MetaData. This resulted in segmentation violations on apparent zero valued parameter passed as address.

Many image viewer applications are affected in similar manner. However ImageMagic and Firefox do not seem to be affected.

gwenview (23.08.5) using Qt 5.15.13

Whenever I open an image gwenview opens in the task manager and then closes imediately and gives me the crash notification, but only when I open Jpegs, opening pngs still crashes but there's no notification. When I open gwenview directly and try to open a folder, the app closes and doesn't return a crash notification .

The images can be accessed by apps like KolourPaint and can be used as desktop backgrounds or app manager icons, but gwenview, as well as okular and showfoto, do not open.

The problem seemingly apeared after installing the following updates:

gwenview (23.08.5) using Qt 5.15.13

Happens whenever I attempt to open Gwenview by clicking an image file. Does not happen when attempting to open the Gwenview app, but it does crash once I select an image to open through the Gwenview application. It is likely that it is related to Dolphin File Manager, since whenever I open the file explorer, it opens well and doesn't crash but it does give me the crash notification, sometimes multiple times.

Gives this:

Discover notifies for an update which is this:
libexiv2-27 (0.27.6-1ubuntu0.1 -> 0.27.6-1ubuntu0.3
Gwenview loads JPG files and Dolphin doesn't give kioslave5 crashes when previewing JPEG files (hovering over JPGs or directories containing them.)
Guess I'll stay on KDE for a while and just set up a Lubuntu VM.
