*** SUMMARY I am new to KMyMoney. I'm not even sure if my problem is a bug or user error. Moste likely the latter. I love the program but for some reason I am unable to split a transaction or add a subcategory to a category. The options are not hilited as available (at the top) in my version 5.2.1 for windows. I have read the handbook guidelines to perform the task but it doesn't work. I realize this is vague but I am somewhat computer and accounting illiterate. I have attempted to update the version but I can't even seem to figure out how to update my 5.2.1 to a more recent version without it adding a new KMyMoney program. Is there anyone that can tell me what I am doing wrong? STEPS TO REPRODUCE 1. ? 2. ? 3. ? OBSERVED RESULT It doesn't work. EXPECTED RESULT I would like to be able to add subcategories under categories and split transactions. SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS Windows: 11 macOS: (available in the Info Center app, or by running `kinfo` in a terminal window) Linux/KDE Plasma: KDE Plasma Version: KDE Frameworks Version: Qt Version: ADDITIONAL INFORMATION I know i have windows 11. I am not familiar with KDE Plasma, Frameworks, or QT version.

Created attachment 190122 [details] Creating a subcategory Welcome to KMyMoney Laura Does the attached screen recording help? It shows one way you should be able to create a subcategory called "Food" under a parent category called "Groceries". It would help if you could say more exactly which step is not working for you. (I'll do another one for splitting transactions)
Created attachment 190126 [details] Splitting a transaction This attachment shows one way to split a transaction so that the total amount (£10) is split £5 to Fees and £5 to Fuel Again, please could you say more exactly which step is not working for you.

Created attachment 190161 [details] category top function key.png Thank you for your replies. For subcategories when I click category on the left of screen I do not get the same screen as your video. I am attaching photos of what I get on my screen. However, if I click categories at the top I am able to add a new subcategory. But no from a list of categories. The image of my screen from when I click categories at the top is also attached and labeled Category top function key. When I try to split a transaction following your method, I am able to type in data. But when I click enter, it will take me back to the transaction page then KMyMoney shuts down. Then when I go back into KMyMoney the split transaction is not recorded. I hope I am explaining this in a way you understand. I searched the support community for an issue similiar to mine but couldn't find any topics on this. But this could be my limited knowledge of the community. Created attachment 190178 [details] attachment-2108443-0.html Away from my PC for a few days, but from the screenshot at comment #7, it looks like you need make the Name column a bit wider by dragging the border between Name and Type at the top of the columns? Paul is right about the width of the column. It's just a bit too narrow. Move the mouse over the little bar between the columns in the header. Once there, the mouse cursor shape should change. Then double click on this spot and the column should widen as much as necessary for the data in the column. Another method is to drag that other shape to the right which will also widen the column. Regarding the split transaction I am not sure what you are referring to. Maybe, you can describe which buttons you press and which data items you fill before the crash happens (KMyMoney shuts down). And just for reference: which operating system are you using KMyMoney on and which version of KMyMoney do you use (see Help/About KMyMoney). Mine currently shows "Version 5.2.70-f8e3a10bd". Don't worry if yours is different, we just need to know what it is.
Thank you for your reply. I have done as both of you suggested increasing the columns in the header and widened. That fixed that issue. Thank you For split transactions, I go through the steps outlined in the video provided earlier. New transaction, amount, arrowdown select category, split icon, split screen pops up, double click to edit, change the amount for the category selected, enter. New, go through same process, everything totals correctly, then I click ok, the program closes. The transaction is not recorded. I hope this makes sense. I am on KMYMoney version 5.2.1-eda3fb1 I am running the program on Windows 11. I hope this additional information helps. If you answer by e-mail: please do not send back the original text but rather clear it out before writing the answer. This is important, because otherwise it makes it harder for us to follow the entries on the web-site we use (see https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=516469#c11 for yourself). Thank you for your understanding. In the meantime we released 5.2.2 and your remaining problem might already been solved. Please install the latest 5.2.2 which can be found on https://cdn.kde.org/ci-builds/office/kmymoney/5.2/windows/ You need the one that ends in ".exe". While looking through the release notes (see https://kmymoney.org/2026/02/22/kmymoney-5-2-2-released.html) I am pretty sure your problem is a duplicate of bug 514619. This report is based on the very same version you have. The file contains an installer which should replace your existing version when you run it. If you have problems installing KMyMoney, please use the forum at https://discuss.kde.org/tag/kmymoney to ask for help. Since all your topics seem to be resolved, I close this bug as duplicate. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 514619 ***
