Description Albert Astals Cid 2014-11-15 21:11:59 UTC
With breeze my kmail explodes in vertical space making it unable to show the same amount of information that the oxygen one does.

See how kmail with oxygen can show 12 folders more and still has some space on the bottom.

I disagree this is a dupe of that other bug, and also I think the way the other bug was dismissed is pretty bad, if they are not going to accept bug reports in bugzilla why is there an entry in bugzilla? And why are they different than the rest of kde in bug reporting?
Comment 6 Sudhir Khanger 2014-11-16 11:37:29 UTC
Thanks Albert for raising this. Since your voice carries more weight than a general KDE user it might get heard. It sounds seriously wrong when evident problems aren't even being acknowledged.

Thought you might be interested in discussions on KDE forums.

I've opened my own thread on https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=285&t=123715

Since this is a specific bug report about a specific aspect of the style I'll re-open the bug report while the VDG works with Hugo to see what spacing can be recovered without violating the design goals of Breeze regarding spacing.

As mentioned in the linked forum threads, these design goals are different than Oxygen or any other style so comparison between breeze and other styles may provide limited validation benefit. Therefore any recovered spacing will still result in list and treeviews showing less information than oxygen. But we'll still make the effort and we'll leave this bug open until that effort is exhausted.

Bug 340623 for which this was marked a duplicate is much more general and was correctly I believe was correctly dispositioned as "intended design".

@Andrew
Regarding the other bug. It may have been general and the reason for it is that you can't expect user to know what a ListView is. A general bug was closed by a general comment not addressing the problem itself and also making presumptuous assumptions that the reporter doesn't like something. The least could have been done was to ask reporter if he could point of the exact problem.

If you read the description I am talking about the same listview but using language that normal people would use. Nonetheless it came to your attention and is being addressed is what I expected in the first place. So thank you for looking into it.

I changed the theme to oxygen, which solved my problem.
Comment 13 Andrew Lake 2015-01-08 22:38:34 UTC
A review of all margin and spacing metrics in the Breeze style was conducted as promised and several changes were made to remove some inconsistencies and provide some refinement. Of those changes, the ones specific to this bug report are:
- List and table header margins have been reduced (commit 2ff1209d)
- List and table item margins have been reduced (commit f1fee30b)

While the result is not quite as compact as Oxygen, it does result in a bit more information density in the list views while continuing to satisfy the design goals of main Breeze style.

Thanks for that change! Well appreciated.
