After clicking "play" on dolphin's information panel, a black square appears under thumbnail and playback doesn't start. Playback in draginplayer and ktorrent works fine. Reproducible: Always

If it plays in DragonPlayer but not in Delphin, while they are both using Phonon for playback, then this is probably a problem in Dolphin.

But then Phonon might want to provide a more helpful error message than PHONON-GST "Can't play a text file without video or visualizations." To me, this message looks like Phonon thinks that it's not a video file at all? How can this be a Dolphin bug?
I just tried it, and it works fine here with the GStreamer backend (version 4.7.1) and Dolphin 4.13.3 as provided by OpenSuse. What is your Dolphin/KDE SC version?
I can confirm this bug with Dolphin 4.13.3 and the GStreamer backend version 4.7.3. I'm using the Kubuntu 14.04 packages.
